REAL numbers

We had one of the first V-10s from Ford and it was real consistent on the ranch with 12-13 unloaded, and 8-9 loaded. Put 175,000 miles on it and then got another one, great for power, just a little thirsty. The new one is running about 14 empty and 10 loaded, so a little improvement. The nice thing is that with the resale, you can pick one up pretty cheap, and they pulled our 22ft stock trailer all over the place.

I have an 08 f150 with the 5.4. no programmer though. highway at about 70 to 75 i get around 17.5 unless i have a head wind then it goes down. with a sled deck and 2 sleds i get 11-12 at the same speeds. (this is checking with a calculator not the display mileage, which is almost always exactly .5 mpg better than hand calculations.)

On my 05 f-150 with an Edge programmer, magnaflow single 3" Exhaust, and Volant CAI. I was getting about 17.5 to 18 on the highway and 14-15 in town on the stock wheels and tires. Then I put some 33.5" X 12.5 tires and new rims on it and it went down to about 16 avg on the highway and 13-14 in town. I also pull a 22ft V front enclosed and loaded w/2-3 sleds and gear I average about 11 MPG pulling.

The biggest benefit to everything was the power increase and the more appropriate shift points for towing. As well as the extra guage functions that the edge offers for watching tranny, oil, and coolant temps, ect

Stock highway driving was around 14.5 -15 and 12-13 in town.

If I had it to do over again I would talk to troyer performance about custom tuning an SCT programmer for my truck instead of the edge.

My pop has the v10 in a f250 with a K&N, stock tires and wheels, 3.73 gear ratio and gets 14 to 15 unloaded and 11 to 12 pulling a boat or sleds. Good little motor, he has 84k miles on it now and it hasnt missed a beat.

We have a 2001 F-250 ext cab V10. It has a topper on it and all our plumbing supplies in the back. w/topper and tools I would say it carrys 2500-3000 pds. Its driven in SW Montana daily going up and down to the resort and canyon. In winter its 10-11.5 and summer its been getting 11.5-13. It has a 3.55 ratio. I wish it had a 3.73. Been very dependable

I had a 2000 v10 it got 8 pullin and 12 to 13 empty. Watch what programer you use on mine i had to run super in it or it would ping. Also had intake and mass air flow sensor cut the cat off it as well didnt do anything for milage. They are just a thirsty motor with all right power.

Can't speak for the Fords, but I can speak for almost all of GM's gasoline motors they've put in pickups for the last 10 years.

2000 5.3L 1500 auto, 3.73 gears, 265/75/16 tires: 14 around town, 17-19 highway.
2003 6.0L Escalade auto, not sure in gears, 265/70/17 tires ... 12 around town, 17 highway.
2005 8.1L 2500HD auto, 3.73 gears, 265/75/16 tires ... 10 around town, 15 highway.
2008 6.0L 1500 auto (Vortec Max, DoD version), 3.73 gears, 265/70/17 tires .... 14 around town, 18-20 on the highway.
2008 6.0L 2500HD auto (6 spd), 4.10 gears, 245/75/16 tires ... 12 around town, 16 highway.

All vehicles listed above have had extensive records kept (yes, I'm not kidding) on costs. The miledge numbers I've listed above are real-world averages, not a bunch of made up ****. The quoted Escalade with the 6.0L and the 2008 1500 Vortec Max are vehicles my had ... Like I said, extensive records were kept on both vehicles. And again, I'm not BS'ing about that .See link at end of post ....

Some food for thought ... the 2000 5.3L 1/2 ton I had before my 2005 8.1L 3/4 ton ... I got 9 mpg pulling my small 2 place enclosed snowmobiles trailer with the 5.3L, and it would BARLEY pull the thing up long hills faster than 30 mph .....

With my 2005 8.1L 2500HD, I get ... shockingly .... 9-10 mpg towing the exact same trailer and it's not even funny how much better it pulls.

With that said, if I latch onto my dad's 24' enclosed (mine is 16') with the 8.1L, I still get 9 mpg towing, and that trailer with 3 sleds in it probably weighs 1,500-lbs more than my 16' does with two sleds in it.

Also, it should be noted that between the 2008 2500HD 6.0L and the 2005 8.1L, I have never observed a significant improvement in miledge between the 6.0L and the 8.1L ... for all practical purposes, they get virtually the same miledge. I will say, the 6.0L does get slightly better miledge overall than the 8.1L, but the 8.1L more than makes up for it with towing abillity. I'm pretty upset that GM is no longer putting the 8.1L in the 3/4 ton and 1-ton trucks.

Here's a spreadsheet I wrote a long time ago to keep track of vehicle costs:

http://www.spoh.com/~dogmeat/2000silverado.xls

That was my 2000 silverado's first 16,000 miles

here's a blank template

My 02 V10 was getting something along the lines of 8mpg on the highway and less loaded. Owned it for 4 months.

i dont have much experience with the fords but have tried some things on my 01 chev 8.1 gasser. as far as gains from a handheld programmer i tried a bully dog on my truck and seen a about 1/2-1 mpg gain but i believe the only reason for that was that it adjusted the speedometer for the bigger tires that were on the truck and had nothing to do with "better" tuning from the programmer. after that i ended up ditching the handheld programmer and added exhaust, intake and had a custom tune done on it at a local dyno shop and i did some model specific cheap mods i read about on gm forums and gained 1-2 mpgs depending on driving conditions. i dont know what made the actuall gains but i believe on my truck adding the intake made the best seat of the pants mod.

so get her breathing a bit better and as far as retuning goes i'd say if you can swing it dont waste money on a handheld programmer and take it somewhere and have a custom tune done.

p.s. i agree with what dogmeat says about the 8.1 chev, awesome gasser motor.
