Picked this old girl up a couple weeks ago on a whim. 1977 Pantera 500 F/A. Got some snow on the ground so cleaned it up a bit, checked some basics, put some fresh fuel in, and banged some ditches from my front door!

From what I can tell this sled is the same as the "cross country cat" factory cross country racer of the time, but with a 500 instead of a 340. completely different chassis from the el tigres - boxed aluminum bulkhead instead of steel that is lighter and stronger, first skid frame with more than 3" of travel (LOL), dual fuel tanks with 10gal capacity, and a big 121 x 16W track. It's surprising how comfortable it is to sit on and ride for a 46 year old sled.

Guys on vintage Cat pages on FB say it was the original mountain sled: big track, light, had decent range to go out in the mountains and back with the dual fuel tanks, and big motor. Supposedly would go through more snow than others. Was Cat's biggest seller by a long shot, but it's kind of strange I haven't noticed them much. All of this with a "for the time" asterisk. It's going to pull some vintage race duty once a year for me now!
