Tempest Goggles

Received the new Tempest heated goggles today. Great goggles but they do not fit with my FXR helmet.

The issue is that the outriggers on the goggles do not extend out far enough. The result is that the helmet strap cannot exert enough pressure on the goggles to keep them tight on my face.

I compared the Tempest goggles to my Klim Oculus goggles, big difference in the outriggers. The Klim outriggers extend outward significantly further, which allows the goggles to be placed firmly against my face.

Bummer for sure. I had high hopes for the Tempest goggles. Maybe they will fit okay with a different helmet. I think they took a ski goggle and tried to make it a snowmobile goggle, but missed the mark for me anyway.

that’d be some good info to send back to tempest if you haven’t already.

Which version, the new frameless large lens, or traditional framed goggles? Was looking to get a set, but now wondering if they'll fit my 6D helmet.

The framed ones.

My understanding is that the goggles are the same as far as frame and fit and there is just a difference in the lenses.

Returns are not free. So keep that in mind too.

That does suck but if you have a lot of trouble with fogging it would be worth it to get a new helmet.
My son sweats a lot he’s had the 509 and Oakley heated goggles and still had fogging issues needed multiple pairs to get through the day.
Picked up a set of tempest last year and he gets through the day with zero fogging usually has half battery power at the end of the day.

Gonna try the new Klim heated goggles.
Why not just replace the helmet? Hate to see a guy go backwards with the battery pack and cord hanging off your helmet.

Have found the Tempest with 509 Altitude to be a good match. Plus, it's probably time to replace your helmet anyways.

I love my helmet and I doubt the helmet is the issue. The outriggers on the Tempest goggles are just not sufficient. I think they just took their ski goggle and added outriggers without testing them on different helmets.

I have an older set of ABOM and from what I understand they then became Tempest. They are a more ski specific goggle and have fit well with my Fly helmets and 509 Altitude. A few guys I ride with have the Tempest and really like them.

my old ABOM's (now Tempest) fit my 509 helmet no prob but the most intriguing thing about their goggles now are that they're automatic. the previous versions had a couple of buttons and modes that weren't always easy to activate with gloves on.
the faq page states that the outriggers and nose guard are the only differences between the ski and sled models. thinking about getting some now that there's no buttons and modes to fiddle with but i may give them a call about the outrigger issue.

I had high hopes for them. The lens system seems great. A couple of mods and they would be good to go:

Extended foam around goggles; and

More snowmobile specific strap outriggers.

couldn't find a phone number but didn't look that hard. sent them an email asking about the outrigger issue and i'll report what they say.
Unfortunately people may have to just try them with their helmet and see if they work.

heard back from tempest and here's what they said:
"We’re aware of the outrigger comment made by a Tempest customer and given that this is the only customer that has made such an observation, we are treating it as a one-off."
this got me curious about my old ABOM goggles so i dug them out and they have no outriggers at all--the elastic band just enters into either side of them.
anyway, i watched one of the the snowest vids where the CEO of Tempest was interviewed and read a bunch of reviews and ended up ordering a pair. i liked the ABOMs but what sold me on these is no buttons to deal with, there's no turning them on or off so they can't be left on to drain the battery and potentially days worth of use per charge.

There are many different models and brands of helmets, so the Tempest goggles might just work on some of them. Hopefully those that try them have the right helmet for them. They do seem to have a lot of great features.

I bought the Tempest goggles at the start of last season. I also spent a bunch of money on having a prescription insert made for it (which they started offering after I told them about a goggle vendor that offered it). The goggles themselves work very well. Add in the prescription insert and forget it. The goggle lens will be clear. The prescription lenses will be fogged up. Another very annoying problem with the goggles is that there is no power switch. So in my experience, you cannot charge them and have them ready for the next ride because it will get cold in the trailer where they're stored, and they will power up and eventually run down the battery. You have to keep them inside or charge the night before the ride.

I went back to using my prescription athletic glasses and skip goggles entirely. if I'm going to be riding in storm or questionable conditions, I wear a Dual Sport motorcycle helmet with a visor. I can keep it cracked open a bit to vent it enough to see be able to see.

Going back twenty years, I had Smith goggles with a battery powered fan in them. They were awesome. I had a prescription insert in them too and everything stayed fog-free. Unfortunately, they aren't made anymore, and the pair I have no longer function. I've been unable to repair them.

I had your same experience for many years.

However,

For the last 3 seasons.

Now i use CKX 210 goggles and the largest battery pack CKX sells. (Battery about the size of 2 IPhones stacked)

Battery in pocket, 5 settings available. (Max setting is warm enough to feel on your face)

Keeps the goggles clear AND my glasses clear all day in -20 F.

I just rode a full day yesterday without taking my goggles off once.
