I am looking to buy a new sled, I want a M for sure, but I am trying to decide between what motor. I am really wanting an M1000 for the power, but I did a bit of research on here, and I can come up with a alot of threads quick about M1000's bogging, blowing belts or electrical issues etc. I search for M8 and there seem to be alot less people having problems with them.
I know I would really like the extra power of the M1000, I also like the fact that you can get alot more power out of them for a fairly cheap price. As far as weight goes, I am not worried, I already drive a trail Apex that is extended to 144. So even going to a M1000 I will be losing weight.

My max budget is 5000$, so whatever sled I buy will most likely have to be an 07 to fit into the price range.

I am just trying to find people who have an M1000 and are glad they own one, and hopefully people who have had little to no bad experiences. I don't want to buy a sled that I need to worry about something breaking every time I ride it. So I would appreciate your experiences with M1000's, good or bad.

I have a 07 m1000. It is a great sled. As far as problems go, just do your home work on the forums. I think the people that are having problems have done mods and then not fueled them properly. IMO go with the 1000 there has been a few people on here that say they own both the 1000 and the 800. They have said that the 1000 is way more fun to ride. I have done alot of work to my 07 and it works very well. It weighs 480 full of coolant and oil, no gas and should have around 155hp at altitude. Heres a video with a slightly modded XP

This topic can be answered with an easy question: what type of riding do you do?

I have an '09 M1000 , '09 M8 , and '07 M8. For all out grunt and hill climbing - M1000 all day long. For boondocking , you will be less tired at the end of the day on an M8 as it is easier to flick around. We were in McCall a couple weeks ago - spent a lot of time on my M1000 - at the end of a day I jumped on an M8 and was amazed at the lighter feel , and I feel I have a lot of weight out of my M1000. Their is that much difference in the motor weight I believe.

You will have a hard time making a M1000 lighter and quicker with a $5000 budget though. Good luck in your decision.

I am looking at a 07 M1000 Sno pro with about 1100 miles, a powder claw track, d&d y pipe and can. Supposedly in great condition for 5500$ somewhat close to where I live here in the midwest.(Most of the sleds for sale on this site are out west)

I was hoping he would go down to 5000$. He said without the y pipe and can for 5250.

I don't think he has a boondocker box on it either at least that I have heard. So I am a little worried about that.

What do you guys think about it?

Pay the extra $250, you'll end up getting a Y pipe & can anyhow.

For 99.9% of sleds the Y with no fuel box is no problem.

I've had 3 1000's, I could not buy an M8 again without a turbo. It takes very little to make the 1000 rip, it takes a lot to make the 8 a solid contender.

I have an 07 M1k 162 and love it. Came off an M7 162. As for people saying the 1000 is harder to ride in tight trees, I have found the opposite. The extra power lets you do so much more in tight trees with really deep snow, it just keeps going. I am a lot less tired at the end of a really deep day on the 1000

Love the 1000, take the pipe off and look at the pistons, do a compression check and ride it. If all check out I would say its a good deal. Personally I would let him keep the y and can, then when you get the money get the full slp pipe with power commander. "and egts!!!!" If you get it with the y and can check the plugs a few times and if its at all white add a fuel controller or a F/P reg. On my 1000 it was fine for a 12 sec pull but after that the egts got scary. I was up to 51-53psi and it made it run a lot better on long pulls.

But if 5000 is all you have I would save a little longer so your not trying to be cheap and it cost you money. The 1000 is not the sled to be cheap on,

Does the sled have the 09 style rear bumper, if not your not getting the full potential out of the PC

Oh yeah for the M1!

All this talk about how great the M1000's are is making me more excited than I already am. Just purchased a brand new M1000 that I'm picking up on Sunday. It will be a big upgrade from my 900 King Cat and I'm excited about the potential of this sled. Best part is, after a month of shopping and waiting till the last minute to buy, got the new '08 for $5,300 otd. All I have left to pay is my $89 title fee.

M1000s rock! Put a lightweight can on it and clutch it right and they are a great sled. As stated above, most problems come from mods, which is the case on all sleds. Change diamond drive oil religiously and you'll be fine.

have one of each-love my M1000, have done alot of lighten up on it, it feels way lighter than my wife's 09 M8! But that's probably from the power!

It would be nice to buy a new sled for that here in AK. The best price quote from the dealer her was $9400. for a 09 1000 sp153.

What do you mean about the bumper? We put a power claw on an 07 1000.

He is saying you need to shortin the running boards and make the tunnel more like the 09's to let the PC get down and dig to the solid stuff to get all the potential out of it. The PC track does great, but one of the nice things about it also is when it starts to go down you don't want the running boards on the back of the tunnel keeping you from digging and scratching for that last little bit.

As for the sled choice. Get some EGT guages if you can. Get all the reflash work done. And ride it.

If you start doing any mods again have the EGT's to keep an eye on it. It will burn down I have seen them burn down with just a can and Y pipe. And others run the can, Y pipe and an intake without any trouble. All depends on the factory fuel setting and each sled is different. So have the guages to watch it.

Otherwise it has been a really good sled.

09 M1000. a few trinkets. Yes you will find "issues" with it if u do mods to it. What r we in this sport for tho? Hp and enjoying our saturdays right? Put the time into the getting to understand your sled b4 you buy it, mod the piss outta it and then blow some minds. I seem to have gotten my 1000 to run at peak performance with a bout $3k in mods on a stock motor. I bought the machine as a backup to my M9 and I seem to find myself riding it all too often now. Pull and go everytime.............
