why not a holset turbo ?

a question for you turbo gurus .why is that every body uses a garret turbo or aerocharger ? .the aero explains its self . newer holset turbos have a variable vane setup even a exhaust brake , maybe something i dont know.but they sure make a cummins purr ..even the old kits were all garret .
 
Most of the variable geometry turbos that the new diesels are using are electronically actuated. Which, doesnt make it impossible to be used in a snowmobile aplication, but the added complexity makes it cost prohibitive. People are already paying $6k for a "top shelf" thurbo package, imagine what it would be when you add in another control box for the turbo turbine, and countless hours for the tuner to develop maping for vein position-vs-boost-vs-RPM-vs-throttle position.

It would be cool to have, no doubt. You could run a big turbine and housing that would let you really stretch out the top end of the sled, without having that on-or-off peaky laggy boost that tipically comes with larger turbos.

Lastly, im not real sure that there is an offering of a variable geometry turbo sized small enough to work effectively with a sled engine that wouldnt cost as much itself as the kits do now. But, i havent looked for a while. LO!
 
Mitsubishi are $300 cheaper than garret and work just as good imo. Im not 100% sure i here MPI is using Mitsubishi on all there Viper kits
 
I'm only aware of one guy that's ever run a Holset on a sled, Brad Story on his '03.5 Summit REV.....basically straight off a 5.9 Cummins. It's wildly oversized and has a ton of lag, but pulls like a freight train wide open spooled up. The new variable vane stuff would need a computer to control when to open the vanes. The Aerocharger vanes are all mechanical. Garrett's not the only player in turbo sled world, you have MHI (Mitsubishi), Borg Warner, kPa, Comp, Precision, Turobnetics to name a few...

The nice thing about Garrett is they have a huge dealer network, so if you need parts or service work its easy to find someone to help ya out! Plus Garrett's are 1/2 the cost of an Aerocharger!
 
also, almost all auto only turbos are journal bearing and that dont work on a 2 stroke very well, needs high oil psi to live and thats a pain.

ball bearing is hard to beat, basically takes a dribble of oil to keep it living.
 
Had to replace some electronic control stuff on a John Deere variable this last summer. Don't remember the cost, but it was't cheap.

people already complain enough about weight a hole variable vane is about 10lbs heavier than a standard garret of same size.
 
Holset is more of an oem manufacturer, not into building performance units. I have boosted a lot of vehicles with hx35's over the years though. They are great on small car motors and will support around 400hp.
