I am looking at buying a sled for this winter, i have found some good deals on some m7's and some m8's. I owned an m7 last year and loved it but didnt want to make payments on it all summer. What is your opinion on what to go with. I do mostly boondocking and climbing.

Buy the 09 M8. Lighter than the M7 by about 15-20lbs and more power with a much better track.

They almost the same but the 8 is heavier, and the 07 and 08's are alot heavier. I think he is looking for used. You can find used 7's for 4k+. I put the power claw on my 7 and love it, way better than the attack 20 and maverick...so far (My experience with single ply tracks hasn't been good.)

Both these weights were taken from the same scale and are with full fluid, oil and gas.

True the 09 had the boss seat and was a sno pro but if you add 9lbs for the boss seat and 3 extra pounds for the standard shocks the 09 is still 13lbs lighter than the 05 M7. These new 09 M8's are light this year. The m8's are way better to mod and have a ton of potential.

just for the reverse i'd take the 8, let alone the power advantage. better clutches, suspension, put the bde rear end on one, some no-snows, and they abosolutley rip. have a couple of 7 and 8's in our group and the 8's always seem to go higher. that may be due to rider expertise:) other opinions may vary but they will be wrong...

Go with the m7 and then put the extar 3500 bucks that you would pay for a used m8 into mods for the m7. Worse case scenario is having no reverse. Go to the swapmeet there are tons of m7s in mint condition for like $4-5 k. IN mint condition. Or wait 3 yr and do the same with an m8..........

I have a M7 and my Dad has a 07 M8 and we have the same changes made and same clutches and helixs. The M7 will bet the M8 drag racing on the flats its low mid and top end faster, all the way across the flats it pulls away. But the m8 will out climb the m7 in the deep heavy snow.

I have a 05 and 06 m7, my 06 is a 162LE with timbersled rear suspension, 2.5 camo extreme, speedwerx single pipe. 84mm bore, aka 770cc ported to basically stock m7 specs, after big bore, cut stock head, and so far I have not been out high marked by any m1000.
With the nitrious its not even close.
With everything done I only invested 3500 bucks. DID the BB myself only cost 200.oo in parts and plating. Oh had the pistons, say 315.00 with pistons.
Mine on a scale down 2 gallons of gas was 504.5 lbs

I have an 06 M7 162 LE and added the float rear suspension conversion like the 08-10 sleds on top of having floats in the front and TI springs throughout the sled.......Needless to say the sled is very light. With D&D single exhaust and Y-pipe, skinz can, 10.4 secondary it has more juice than an 07-08 M8 from mid range through top end that's for sure. The thing is the M7 really lacks torque, the larger secondary helps it pull better down low, but I can see in a good climb that the M8 will be better. The 09 M8 is definitely a light sled, the 07-08 M8's porked up from the 05-06 M's, and have a weak diamond drive....IMHO stay away from them. If price is not a huge concern the 09 is your best bet as far as an M8 goes, you could also go with an 07-08 but jest realize there is a weight penalty and the DD w/ mechanical reverse is really a weak link. I just ordered a 2010 M8 153 SP and am trading in the M7 with only 1600 miles on it, so I am definitely on board with the 09-10 M8's being great sleds. All the best in you search!

:)

Yeah and 08's were what? I have and 09 and love it but 07 and 08's are pretty hefty. I was stating that because he isn't looking for a new sled.
