I don't think they can do that.

Oh yeah they can.

I guess the current players are 1.0, the new ones (2.0) will REQUIRE an internet connection at all times. The older players are not capable of being upgraded.

also... AACS encryption is mandatory. If the disc does not have AACS encryption on it, the Blue Ray player will not play it.

Also for those who are hoping to shoot your home video on Blue Ray.. it is not really possible, for your discs will also have to have the encrpytion on it.

Some of that could change, but I wouldn't be spending any major money on a Blue Ray player at this point.

You can get HD-DVD players for about $80 and you get 5 free DVD's with them. You can probably also suck up some cheap titles right now. If you MUST have an HD format, I would jump on that and buy up the titles you can get your hands on for cheap. Then wait it out and get the NEW Blue Ray player in a year or so.

PS3... ;)

I've read that they are upgradeable in that department.

Mach, I hope no one was trying to argue that upconverted SD DVD's look as good as 1080P Blu-Ray. They're wasting their time if they are. My comparasin was based on upconvert abilities between the PS3 and the highly rated Oppo players.

Yes they are upgradeable. They are connected to the internet and get updates every so often.

You are correct in that 2.0 requires an internet connection, but it is to be used for additional content of the disc, not just to play it. It is my understanding that 1.0, 1.1, 2.0 will all be able to play the same discs, just other content will not be possible unless using the latest version of the player.

also... AACS encryption is mandatory. If the disc does not have AACS encryption on it, the Blue Ray player will not play it.

I believe all blu-ray discs require this anyway, though it is mandatory on the disc, not the player I believe. So if you don't have it, it should play fine. (I am not sure about this, but I haven't found anything to the contrary yet.)

If you have references that state the contrary to the above, please list them, I haven't been able to find much specific info on the topics mentioned here.

From everything I have read the differences are:

Profile 1.0 Basic Blue Ray DVD
Profile 1.1 Blue Ray DVD with featured Picture in Picture
Profile 2.0 Needs an internet connection to access features of the DVD.

If you try and play a 1.0 Blue ray disc on a 1.1 or 2.0 player it will still work but you will not get the added features that those profiles have.

I know. Mine sits right beside my wireless router and is cabled to it. ;)

I think I am going to go with a PS3, I heard the Blue Ray Players are slow as hell to load and startup.

At least I can get a new video game system with the PS3!

Hey Beels do you have the 40 gig or the bigger one? I heard the 40 gigs don't play PS2 games and you had to go with the bigger one to get them to work.

This is true. But I have a PS2 so it doesnt really matter to me. The 60 and 80 gigs can play PS2 though.

PS3 is upgradable because it is Sony product and they designed it specifically knowing upgrades would happen later on. They never gave the ability to other players. That is the problem with Blue Ray winning. Sony has so much say in the product and if history has told us ANYTHING, Sony seems to kill their own formats with lame rules;
-Betamax
-Mini DVD
-ATRAC (digital format)

3rd party developers cannot release software or players, all players have to be certified by Blue Ray.

What I mean by the encryption is that it is mandatory on the disc, but if the disc does not have it the player will not play it.

I saw an HD/BluRay demo last night at a store.....HOLY SHEITE Muslim it's a good picture.

HD DVD is pretty darn nice...but Blue Ray was like 3D HD compared to HD DVD. They were playing Casino Royale side by side with identical TVs.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!

what do you mean?

with my eyes on my tv i can tell a difference in picture quality. Ive tried switching HDMI cables from box to box and different priced cables from box to box...

Its always the same result the blu ray picture looks better. Not that the HD dvd pictures looks bad, just looks like the blu ray picture has that extra something...

when i get transformers on blu ray i will put both discs in at the same time one HD and one blu ray and will swap back and forth to make sure im not crazy!!! LOL

With technology constantly changing, Sony's Blu-Ray format might become obsolete before they have the chance to lower their price's and entice the public, IMO the cost of the player and movies will not go down much since they have the monopoly and no competition. I think most people are satisfied with the quality and cost of the currant DVD. The next new format should not have anything to do with spinning a disc.

downloading movies, or playing them over the internet will be the next big thing, which is why its important to have a player with internet capabilities.

go to a FYE store and find used blu ray movies and players for 1/3 the price. $15 for movies is much more reasonable than $40 new. Heck even amazon.com sells used movies and players.

If people are satisfied with current DVD then they have never seen blu ray on a full HD tv... you can never go back...
