BDX Rock Rollers keep breaking, what gives?

so this is the 2nd time I found the rock rollers gone. This time 3 of them for forward part on the helix broke, it chewed the helix, so now that Speedwerx helix is shot.

Why is this happening? theyre not that old. put them on last season before I went out west, so maybe 700ish miles on it.

Sled is a 07 M1000 153" with SLP full kit, BD box, with Speedwerx clutch kit.

Wow, I really have no idea but, here are a few guesses.

Maybe your secondary clutch bushing is shot and allowing things to twist and load the buttons in a way they weren't designed?

Maybe your secondary spring is shot or broken?

Maybe you are pulling WAY to much helix angle and simply overloading the buttons?

Maybe they were installed incorrectly and weren't rolling properly?

Maybe they were part of a manufacturing problem with the manufacturer getting substandard material from a vendor?

Maybe they weren't manufactured to the correct specification?

Maybe it was a full moon on the day the rub buttons were manufactured? :face-icon-small-ton

Yeah lots of stuff to look into. Sled has 5,000+ miles on it, so I'm sure the secondary is worn out and needs to be rebuilt. spring is stock cat orange, helix is straight 36* from speedwerx

I am also still running 8,000-10,000 ft setup at 1,000 ft elevation, so she's running 7,600ish rpm at full throttle. Not sure if that would have anything to do but just thought I'd add it here.

It is HIGHLY likely that your secondary movable bushing is worn out and causing them to break. Happened to me as well as many others.

its a mechanical reverse

I'll have to take look at cutler ones.

I am not worried if the clutch explodes, I'm just going to find new rollers around town and put stock helix in. This weekend is going to be warm, then next week is all in the 40's. So saturday would be my last ride. Then for next season it will have both the primary and secondary either completely rebuilt or replaced. I'm planning a lot of work on it over the summer since she's old, worn out, tired, but very reliable since I bought her new out of box carryover model in '08! :)

i just went thru this about a month ago. id bet the bushing is shot on ur movable sheave. bdx will rebuild them. i just bought a new clutch cause the costs were very comparable. my sled is an 10 m8 with 4100 mi.

Same thing happened a few years ago on my M7. The bushing in the secondary was toast, but like someone else said, buy the cutler ones, I've used both and the cutler ones last a LOT longer.

Send your secondary to Jeff at BDX, he had mine rebuilt and back in the mail the same day he got it! Great service and better than new working clutch.

I have had some similar experiences with rock rollers on multiple sleds. Although I will say, the sleds that were having these rollers explode were ones with electronic reverse. A lot of guys swear by these rollers, I just haven't had that much luck with them.

3" bushing is shot. Formula x1 can put a much better bushing in and replaces the aluminum shaft with a steel one... It will last a lot longer than anything else.

its weird how some last and some don't, my brother put some in his m7 and they broke within two seasons yet I've had the same set in my m7 for 5-6 seasons and they still look fine. mine actually looks like the helix has more wear on it than the rock rollers.

OR......it is because the roller is slamming into the notch on the helix when you take off from a stop. Pay attention when you take off from a stop, do you hear a clunk? That is the rollers slamming against the helix. Hard, brittle rollers make it pretty easy to snap. Be aware of this happening and engage your clutches before you put it to the bars. Check it out, might save you a few hundred $$.

I forgot to mention that BDX admitted to me several years ago when I had some grenade that they had a bad batch that got to the public. I have no idea how many escaped but maybe you got part of the batch.

I normally always let the clutch enage before i take off, I know there were some occassions that I didn't. So maybe that is why.

I just took the clutch apart, all 9 screws but one that holds the helix in place with the outer sheave, came out. that one screw, as I was going to loosen it after heating it up, just turned with no problem. Found out only half of the length came out, rest is broken and stuck in the helix. But that does not matter anyways since the helix is all chewed up.

The outer sheave, it does wiggle around, i can tilt it up and down with about 1-2 inches of tilt. I am not sure how much it wiggles around from side to side, maybe .040" need to find a feeler gauge.

I am sure that clutch is way out of spec. Not sure if it can be rebuilt. WIll have to talk to BDX and see over the summer. But for now I'm putting in the stock helix 44/40 back in with new rollers just so i can ride this weekend before putting it away for the season.

X2 Yep

wow removing the roll pins and roller pins are a bitch this time! wasn't that bad before! now the roller pins are stuck in there, i've bent plenty allen wrenches already! I'm ready to take a hammer to the whole thing! lol had to walk away for a bit otherwise the damage would be unrepairable to be able to ride one last time this weekend!

gave up, took it to dealer, got the roller pin pushed out for no charge and they even removed a broken roll pin. nice of them.

Got new cat roller on for the drive part, reverse rollers are still rock rollers, looks funny brown and white rollers lol . but hopefully it will hold for the weekend so I can have some fun!
