First off, I am only posting this here instead of the gps forum b/c I am looking for ideas specific to the fusion/rmk chassis. I picked up a garmin nuvi 500 and am looking for a good way or spot to mount it. sled is a stock fusion, no bar risers or anything.

Only thought Ive had so far is the ram u-bolt mount to the steering shaft, then an arm up to the top of the handlebars...Would like to see some different ideas, and pics would be great.

Thanks!

Ram mount is probably the best. I would put it on the top of the bars.

I'll take some picks of mine and post them tomorrow.

Install was on a pretty much stock 900 fusion.

I used the RAM mount and mounted it (Garmin Oregon) to the handlebar on the right side above the bar. I used a speed bore (or forstner drill bit don't recall which but I'll post when i post picks) to drill a partial hole in the bar cover. I then put 4 slices in the remaining material with a knife so that it would break away if pushed upon. With this i could push the RAM mount ball through. Finish turned out great IMO.

For the power, I went to Canadian Tire and picked up a waterproof power adapter. I took the wire end of the power adapter and made a permanent connection (solder and heat shrink) to an old electric visor cord. I plug this into my electric visor jack (because I never use it).

Do you guys trust garmin nuvi to get you back home from the out of nowere ?
They are street navigation gps.
marine gps are what are used to get back home here in the arctic.
I Would not mount it on top of the handlebar. It will be the first thing to brake in a rollover.

Around here, I can download trail map overlays to the garmin...unfortunately I dont find myself in the middle of nowhere often. Just looking for a good way to mount it on a fusion. Thanks for the pics, I like that setup

Holy Cow those are big GPS units!

I use a Garmin Etrex HC with the included bar mount, it ends up within the space below the mountain strap on the bars.

But anyways... something I learned using helmet cams... Use a small piece of cable, or a wrist strap from a digi-camera or cell phone to tether your GPS to your sled, so that if your mount ever fails, your expensive electronics wont be lost!

Big and accurate screen. I often need to drive by gps in bad conditions

Yeah I can see that being a good thing. I only use mine for area mapping, tracks, and emergency waypoints on my sled. In the summer though... we find open alpine hills and ancient cutlines on google earth, and then cross country our access with the gps points I make on GE

I used a 1" speed bore bit (be careful not to go all the way through the handlebar pad).

Danbot has an excellent point wrt the use of a tether for added security.

I would have preferred an inside lower mount but didn't feel comfortable with it considering stock steering (i.e., no riser).

Here are the pics...
