What is too many miles on an M8?

I'm looking at a used M8. It's a 2008, has SLP pipe/can, Lefty, Riser, Powder Pros, has a fairly new Power Claw track and the 09 rear tunnel piece. It's super clean, starts on the first pull. Downside is it has 3300 miles. The guy wants $6000 for it, seems kinda high for the miles.

How long do these motors go before they need work? I know years ago before the M's came out, 3000 was about all you could expect before doing rings or risk losing the motor. Likewise, the diamond drive seals, the other bearings, etc.

Wondering if I should keep looking. Thing is, it's really clean and has good mods. If I got him down to $5k, would it be worth it. I dunno.

Seems kinda high to me too. I bought my 08 M8 SP for $5900 in 2009 with 700 miles on it. It also included some nice mods. With the new sleds coming out and the high miles I say more like $4000-4500 sounds better. I wouldn't be too concerned with the motor and you can replace rings and jugs fairly cheap as a precautionary measure. The diamond drive is just something you never know about. I've never had a problem with mine yet and it has high miles too.

All depends how its been cared for and what oil has been run through it. I think 6k is a little high. 5k is more in the range. Take the y pipe off and look at the pistons and cylinder walls with a flash light. I really wouldn't be afraid of 3k. My buddies M7 went 9k on stock pistons. Mostly mountain riding too.

Thanks for the quick replies! Cool so the miles aren't too big of a deal. But yeah the price is pretty high.

I don't think he'll sell it for $3500. I might offer him $4000 and when finishes choking (or laughing), work him up closer to $5k. But I'm also looking for some leftover new 09's and 10's that maybe I can get a good deal on.

I'm soooo tempted to get one of the new 12's but I'm not sure if they'll handle as well with the center of gravity being raised by the return of the jackshaft.. And I don't really want to spend $11-12k on a sled. Maybe grab a leftover next fall when the 13's come out.

not 6000

Friend payed 5000 for 08 m8 2winters ago with only 700 miles. The m8 motors are solid, but 3300 is getting up there. m8 rings and pistons at 4000 to be on safe site..

I payed 6000 for a brand new (50 miles) 08 M1000 still with a warranty and some extras so I'd say homeboy is a little too proud of his ride. Also (I think most will agree) top ends should be replaced every 1500-2000 miles on 2stroke sleds just as preventative maintenance.

I paid $8K for a 2010 M8 in April of 2010, only 350 miles and $800 Bux worth of extras.....Keep shopping, lower mileage sleds are out there. Maybe post where you live. If you're in the middle of nowhere in Canada, that could be the going rate?

I was looking at the photos of the sled my friend sent (the guy who looked at it for me), and it really is mint. One thing caught my eye though. There's quite a bit of rust on the pipe and can, especially the y-pipe right at the motor. This is all ceramic coated SLP stuff. For a sled stored inside, what would cause all of this? I would expect it from a stock pipe, but a ceramic-coated one?

The owner guy kinda defensive (in email) when I brought up the miles and what all it meant, even besides the motor. I'm under the impression he isn't going to budge much on price. for $5000-5500, I might consider it, but I dunno. The rust on the pipe worries me. Makes me wonder just how much moisture has been in the motor, eating away at the bearings. He claimed the diamond drive fluid has been changed twice a season... that I find hard to believe. I would change it yearly, but that's about it.

I'm actually in Southern California. Not much snow here, but really, Mammoth isn't THAT far away. And Kennedy Meadows is a little-known area that's even closer. Plus I may go up to Oregon for the winter. For the right sled, I would go as far as Portland/Boise (to the north), or Grand Junction to the east. But it has to be a good price since the trip will cost me easily $300-500 in fuel and motel. It won't be as convenient to go riding as when I lived in Sacramento, but it'll do.

slps rust if you dont keep clean them with mothers.3300 is nothing,i wouldnt worry about miles but sled is to much money.

DItto what biler said, the rust is normal, they all do it, but there are WAY better deals out there, I wouldn't give 5k for a 3300 mile m8, just too high.

Even with about $3000 in mods? Here's what all it has:

- almost new power claw track
- 09 tunnel ext
- lefty throttle
- powder pros
- riser
- slp pipe & can
- boss seat

So take the mods at 50% of original value, add that back into a $4000 sled, that's $5500. I'm not trying to justify it, just give it proper consideration before I move on. I haven't even made the guy an offer yet.

(edit: no programmer, slp setup didn't require it)

I would look for a 09 lighter and better. As for miles 3300 in nothing. Mods are realy not worth anything when you sell a sled. As for price its way too high youll get a 09 or 10 for that price. I would suggest keep looking. I ride a 08 and it has alot of extras to keep up with a 09. Buy 09 just a better sled.

The '09 went on a diet. It also lost the mechanical reverse. I think the rust on the pipe is a big deal. If the sled had been takin care of that well he would have took care of the pipe as well.

This...Mods dont mean anything as far as adding value to any off road vehical. I always take stuff off and put the stock back on and sell the after market parts and come out way ahead, if anything i would think most people would prefer it stock.

thats too high im selling my 07' M8 basically updated to 09´ everything with 2,500 miles i would be happy to get $3500

bought mine for 3800 and it just needed a hood and it had 700mi and a mbrp can
