Hey Saturday December 5th 2009 My brother woke up to his trailer, his sled and my sled gone from his house in Sioux Falls SD. Both sleds were on our 3 place single axle trailer with a black salt shield.

My sled was a 1997 MXZ 583 with a 1.25 track that has a tear on the right side edge that is being held with glue, yellow cobra windshield, sno-stuff skis, 2 inch handle bar riser and yellow/black Fly handlebar grips. Big holes were drilled into the foot rests. It was being covered by a black Ski-Doo cover.

My brothers sled was a 2004 Summit 800 h.o. with a 144" track, yellow belly pan, yellow hood, yellow console. black panels with half the stickers off. The rear seat has the stripes taken off of it. Gold finger lefty throttle, left head light is broken. Sno-Stuff can, 2 inch riser. polished tunnel, Also has holes drilled behind the belt drive in the panels as well as the foot rests. The snow flap is cut down and the windshield has a yellow NO FEAR sticker on it. It was being covered by a black Polaris cover.

here are some pictures of the sleds on the trailer along with the sleds as they were from the last ride. Hope everyone can keep their eyes open for these sleds.

Keep an eye out on cartrucktrader.com and parts being sold on ebay from this area and the Worthington area. If you remember a couple years back a family got caught steeling and parting out sleds over near Luverne MN. They were stealing sleds out of the Sioux Falls area. Also keep an eye on articchat.com, sledswap.com, hardcorsledder and powerbrokersinc.com. I will try to keep an eye out but will be difficult for me the next week. If they part them out and sell the parts it will be pretty soon. Any other identifiable parks, scratches, holes, tears in seat etc would be helpfull.

Sorry to hear about the theft Stefan, I hope something can be resolved on this for you guys. Chris and I went to the Mayo Clinic last week so she could have her heart valve worked on (everything turned out ok). Before we left I took both left side tires off of my trailer to disable it so it was here when I got home. I felt kind of stupid when I did it but after what happened to you guys I'm glad I did, I think I will leave it that way until we start riding too, see you guys at Christmas.

Look for guys that have listings like this. This guy is on the east side of Mankato, MN and he is parting out a few sleds but not listed as a dealership or online store about them. He is also parting out a 1997 583 MXZ. Wouldn't put it past a thief to snatch and grab while in town here. Look over the parts for identifiable markings.

Only one picture is showing up for me, anyone else?? A guy down the road just pulled some equipment into his driveway recently. I can't remember if they were there last week or not but the sleds and trailer are a very close match to the discription you mentioned. I have only glaced as I drove by but I will take a better look tonight.

Edit: What part of town were they taken from?

Sorry to hear that hope like hell you get them back. There is no doubt in my mind SFalls SD has a serious theft problem, more so than other same size and larger cities. Unfortunately I have also experienced your problem last august and have talked to several locals who say area theft is rampant. Seriously doubt your law enforcement will help you much either, they don't think they have a problem, therefore thieves are pretty safe in Sioux Falls.
I suggest keeping a close eye around your college, I understand a lot of stolen stuff shows up there, mine did. Might even want to check with college security, pass these pics on to them. I think there names are Wayne and John, couple of good guys.
When I am in SF I don't let anything set untended, when I am there over night it goes in a garage or out of town.

Did he remember any different vehicles in the area? 12th and Marion is a pretty busy part of town so without knowing exactly where you are at its hard to get a better idea. I’m guessing there is no new construction in your area so you might be able to rule out the 100s of people in that trade driving by your house on a daily basis. There are new houses going up where I live and we have different people drive by every hour. It’s also a new part of town so we have people lost driving around in circles. I have not had any problems with theft in SF, and have kept sleds and bikes on trailers and in the back of trucks multiple times. However, the most they have been there was a night or two, not enough time for someone to spot them and plan out a theft, they would have had to take them on a whim. I also had them chained in and backed up to a garage so if someone wanted to take them, they would have had to work at it, and prob make some noise in the process. I do know a guy that had his brand new dirt bike stole out of his truck in SF, but he kept it in his truck for a week straight and was staying the nights at his GFs in a pretty shady part of town. Had to make payments for 3 years on a bike he didn’t own…chitty!
I would like to see more pics because they are not showing up on your post for me. Like I said, the guy down the street has me scratching my head some times. If I remember right, about 3 motorcycles came and went from his place this summer, I drove by his place last night and the sleds I mentioned before went from the driveway to the garage, it also looks like he had to move a significant amount of crap in his garage to fit them in there. The trailer I saw did not have a salt shield, but that is easy to ditch. It also seems like it’s a family and maybe a brother living there? I think they run a daycare out of it as well. I think it’s the brother that likes to drive down the street doing 40, I have gotten on his a*s a few times about that with no success.

Could you be more specific about the area? Street Name? W. Nancy, W, Missouri, W. Clay, S. Jeneau, 14th, 15th, 16th st? Trailer park to the northwest side of the intersection or the trailer park on the south east side of the intersection?

i don't know his address but the road behind Stan Houston Equipment. it would be 14th street. and then 3 blocks west of that corner of 14th and marion. His house is between Jackie Ave and Dodge Ave.... He told me that a neighbor came over after the cops came and asked what was going on. he explained and said that a year or so ago Stan Houston had some bobcats on a trailer and they had gotten stolen. They found the trailer i believe in Iowa but not a trace of the bobcats..

Crappy deal, that’s kinda a secluded area too, no thru traffic or businesses (unless I am thinking wrong area, could you see the sleds from 12th street?) so whoever stole them most likely either drove around for something to steal until they found what they wanted….or has been down that road a few times before. I don’t like to point fingers at Law Enforcement since they have a thankless job and put their life on the line everyday….but it seems like SF police could care less about theft and vandalism. Unless you can provide identity on who stole or vandalized, you’re SOL. They will not do any investigation or questioning, they don’t even take the time to compare your details to others around town.

I have 2 guys from work that have been hit with the recent car vandalism going around town, and the help they have gotten from law enforcement is moot. This last weekend, my wife and I went to a movie, on our way home around 49th street and Sertoma when we met a white Honda CRV that threw something at our car. I quickly turned around to chase them down, after hearing about the savvy police work my co-working received. The CRV already had a 4 block head start and as I turned around a car pulled out between us and drove 25 until 41st. By the time I got on 41st he was 6 blocks ahead and knew I was coming for him. After doing 70 on 41st and getting within a few blocks they turned down some residential streets I couldn’t keep up because my car couldn’t hit the dips and low spots as fast…plus after awhile I figured it was not worth killing someone over something thrown at my car. Got home, and sure enough, they threw an egg, but to my surprise it left a huge dent and took the paint off in an egg shaped mark on the door.

I called the PD and got an officer to come by and give me a incident #, the guy was a dick and honestly spoke to me like I was wasting his time, quoting “I don’t know why you got me evolved, it just an egg, wash it off and get over it” I replied I got him involved because it f*cked up my door and if they are doing this chit all night maybe someone else will get a license plate and catch the little SOBs so they can pay for my repairs. Called just today and no one else reported an incident like that, and sure enough, got another call from the body shop with the $550 estimate to pull the dent out and repaint the door.

I was so pizzed after I got home and after the PO stopped by I couldn’t sleep and decided to take my Yukon out as a bait car and drive around the area hoping to see the little SOBs so I could take matters into my own hands. On my drive I stopped into the gas station on the corner as its my regular stop and talked to the guys working the counter and asked if any rowdy teens came in buying eggs. Sure enough, a white CRV with 4-5 high schoolers came in, being obnoxious, and loaded up on Taco Johns, Monster, and….you guessed it…EGGs. He remembered them pretty vividy because of how noisy they were, they also opened the eggs and were throwing them back and forth in the store until one of them dropped one and it broke. They left it and paid for there stuff and left. The guys also said there was a few more cars running through the wash than normal. I asked if he could pull the plates up on the security camera and he said no prob but it would have to be a manager’s decision unless law enforcement requested. I called the PD back up and told them what I found….did they follow up with it?? Of course not! I stopped in the next day to talk to the manager, but he would not pull the tapes stating company policy is to pull for PD only.

What makes it frustrating is the whole time I was doing this; the cop that stopped at my house was pulled up next to another cruiser in the Roosevelt parking lot BS’ing and were there for a good 30-40 minutes that night. The PO also stated right before telling me not to waste his time that it was a slow night and he had no other reports of “this type of thing”. All he needed to do was review the tape, get a plate number and question the kids….easy as that. But instead, he BS’ed with a friend and I’m out $550.

Sorry to high jack your thread, but it I feel this city’s PO is lacking in some areas, and this is one. I also know a guy in construction that had a trailer stolen in SF and had NO cooperation from the SFPD. He ended up finding his trailer by getting the word out with the pawn shops and friends and found about half his tools at pawn shops within a month, but because there was no follow through with the PD, he only recovered those tools…..I think you will need to take matters into your own hands on this one…GOOD LUCK.

yea when my brother reported it the PO came out and asked questions and my brothers like well what are my chances of seeing it again. hes like Well... we get a lot of these reports so its not a good chance that you will see them whole again. Then my brother said you could see where the truck had backed up 6 times to line up the trailer. there was just a bit of snow cover to leave tracks. but they didn't take pictures of the tire marks. also my brother said you could see where someone had walked the fence line and not right through the middle of the yard..but they didn't take pictures of the prints..

ugh oh well hopefully something will come up and i can find them. cause the police will just push it aside

I can assure both of you in both above mentioned cases even if you find the culprits and evidence and your stolen items it wont help you with the SFPD unless the culprits feel some sort of internal motivation to confess their sins. All the thieves got to do is shut up and they will walk.
The very best you could hope for is if YOU find your stuff you will probably get it back, but the criminals will very most likely will walk. I can also assure you the SF cops are not looking for your stuff. The thief could hit a cop car pulling your trailer with your sleds on it and they will cite him for the accident and send him on his way. If you don't believe me just pick a random cop on the street and ask him about your stuff, he won't have a clue.
Hell I even sent an email to your Mayor & Chief of Police about my disgust with this very problem, got a rise out of them but not much else.
Watch the college, I was told this by some locals, it payed off for me.
Also for the good folks in SFalls, lock your stuff up, you got a serious theft problem fueled by a serious complacency problem by your officials.

I have also been hearing about this recently, I guess well over 30 vehicle break ins over the last several weeks.

With the formerly limitless tax collections now being cut short by the recession, most law enforcement agencies are now in strictly collection mode (anything that will bring in bucks). During times like this you had better be ready to defend yourself and your property because no one else will.

I just got back from a friends place that is a SFPD member and when I mentioned it he told me that he had read the report and that it was over near a detectives house that it happened. This detective is also the father of a mutual friend of ours (who also found out from his father) and I'm sure since he rides and has his sons sled at his house on occasion that he's not too happy about it happening just a block or two from his house. We talked for awhile and he confirms the theft problem in SF. Said they have been trying to figure out a pattern to focus the limited resources they have. Part of the problem is there is so much theft going on from copper wire and plumbing, car stereo's, tools etc. Basically anything of value. With today's economy and layoffs still happening, it is expected to get worse. Couple years ago a friend of ours had someone kick in his garage door in his new house and went in and stole a 2Ltr coke bottle filled with change and a 6 pack of beer in the fridge. Door cost him more than what they stole.

Speaking of vandalism, we had a nice glass storm door that was broken a couple weeks ago after dark. I remember hearing a thump but thought nothing of it and the next morning I walked out to see it in pieces. My next house will have both Hurricane Proof windows and Israeli door locks all the way around. The reason for the Israeli door locks is after checking them out when I was in a class as a firefighter. Mike Dugan, a NYFD engine captain flew out and hosted a class for us and showed it off as a recent security device that is difficult for firefighters to defeat. Most doors even steel doors are able to be defeated in short order but they encountered an apartment with a steel door with and Israeli made door lock on it. They could not defeat the lock with a hallogan tool, K tool or hydro cutter. Took 2 guys swinging an ax with all they had for 10 minutes to crease the the steel door and pry it out with hallogen tools. The lock looked similar to the one below. Also they recently saw a trend of homeowners installing hurricane proof windows and the only way they could remove the glass to ventilate a fire was to cut the whole window frame out with a power saw. But people are using these instead of putting unsightly bars across the windows.

It's just a shame that people don't leave other peoples stuff alone. I grew up in a small town where everyone left their doors unlocked and keys in the cars at night. Never had to worry about theft then.

Fosgate, it’s good to hear that at least the SFPD is aware that something is going on. I understand they have limited resources, and like I mentioned before, I don’t like to play the finger pointing game. With my problem that I had, I was a bit put off that no one from the PD would take the 15 minutes to review a security tape and get a plate number, esp when 2 officers were sitting in the parking a lot directly across from the gas station just BS’ing….maybe they were conduction some type of police work, but I don’t know what that would be.

With my case as well, I’m 95% sure if an officer came knocking on the door of a teenagers parents house that just let their kid hang out with friends in the family SUV, that there would be some confessions made, lessons learned, and I would not be out my $550 to get a door fixed. I’m sure those kids didn’t go out egging cars with the intention of doing that much damage to a car, heck I was surprised, but having to pay for the damage would sure as chit be in their head the next time they think of doing it again. Maybe me chasing them scarred the crap out of them to the point that they got to thinking if they did that to the wrong person, someone unstable, carrying a loaded weapon…thing could turn out differently.

Then with today’s sue happy society, you always have to keep you and your families best interest in mind. As I was chasing those kids down all I could think about is what if: what if they crash one of them is killed and the kids family goes after me; what if they are a bunch of wanna be thugs carrying guns and bats and had enough of me following them, would it be justifiable to pull my gun if they come towards me?; what if I see these kids two weeks from now and want to get info out of them by pressing some faces against my damaged car door, how long will it be until I am arrested for assault?

Getting back to the stolen sleds, do you know if the tire tracks looked to be oversized, mud terrain tires? The guy down the road does not have the summit in his garage anymore, but when I drove by this morning the mxz and now a Polaris Dragon are on the trailer tucked in the back of the garage. I have also been keeping a close eye on this house and that Dragon just showed up in the last day or two. I ask about the tires because he is driving a lifted truck with oversized tires…but he also has pipes and don’t know if that would be a very good truck to use in a theft since it could wake the entire neighborhood. I wish I could take a closer look without raising a red flag….if he was closer I could use the .300 win mag scope to get fine details from my bedroom window if he kept his garage door open, but he is far enough down the block that the angle is too steep and I won’t be able to see much.

That's horrible man, that really sucks...

All I can say is check your local classifieds daily, ebay, surrounding states classifieds... I wish I could do something but I'm so far away, I'll keep an eye out on our online classifieds, and ebay... really hope you get your stuff back.

I'm not sure how SD works but here in Idaho we're required to register our sleds... if this is the case with you guys, maybe call in to your local fish and game or whomever checks the tags during your season, and give them photos and description...

Check your local dealers aswell, couple years back when I worked at the local yami/kawi dealer we had a guy bring in a stolen banshee for a new key and ignition (go figure)... the guy had grinded the numbers off the frame and motor and painted over them.... but the guy didn't let the paint dry before bringing it in! Long story short, we chained it to the lift and called the popos...
