Great info, Last year was amazing there, i think it wrecked us for sure, we are from MN, living in idaho this winter.

There was 10-15 ft on the ground in CB when we arrived, crazy.... not sure if you know any of these guys but we rode with a few locals,
Ben Sure
Morrill Griffith -sun sports unlimited-
Trey Lokey -High Altitude boost- (not sure on everyones spelling)

and April Prout from CB ski resort hooked us up with some ski/snowboard athletes to film with.. Nice people in your area :)
can't say that i can say the same for these idaho ppl yet haha.

we are leaving tuesday evening, 10-12 hour drive doesn't bother us we just want some good snow! and you guys def have the terrain. Not sure if we will stay in idaho and try out Mccall/stanley and other places or head to CO.

Again thanks for the info, sounds like everyones having the huge avy slides right to the ground, i heard CookeCity, and 2 other places just had 3 deaths from big slides :(

was it you guys we rode with???

do you remember when Ben shot his Tapex up and onto the top of that face in Robbinsons Basin???

BTW we have gottin about 2 ft in the last 36 hrs.!!:D

Morrill is the Yami/Poo dealer in Gunnison, and Trey builds most of the Yami Turbos around here. April, unfortunately is no longer with CBMR, but is still in town I believe.

PM me if you need any further info about the area, lodging, etc..
Good luck in Idaho!

MtnDoo

BTW - if you're watching the X-Games, there is a Jeep Commercial running that shows a street sign "6th & Bellview" with like 10' of snow - that's Crested Butte, and they snow a quick clip of Whetstone Mountain too - which is on your left when coming into town.

haha!>>>

Yes that was us! haha funny, we got our first dvd out in september at haydays grass drags/swap meet in MN, what you mentioned is in the video. I figured you guys would know those people, Trey has helped us out a lot, and i've rode some of his sleds, pretty amazing, i have to stop hitting trees and jumping before i purchase one of his sleds tho

(i was on the black M7 - Tony smith)

If you PM me i can send you out a video, There's a whole section of CB area.. wait there's 2 whole sections from the area! We got a ton of snowboarding footage from 2 younger guys, Austin Gibney and Brady Farr - they have a section, then Trey and Morrill have a bunch of turbo hillclimbs

We are super anxious to get back to your area because we had such a great time there and the people were really good to us... between CB and Cooke City MT it's a toss up everytime we want to be satisfied haha

Just tell me there's like 4 ft of fluff and we'll be there haha, If we come it would be great to have another guide! lol there's just 2 of us and we want to ride more than film at this point. We put our next video on a 2 year time span, It was hell getting our first video out, I want to enjoy snowmobiling again, -it's about having fun, so lets keep it that way! (not to put filming aside but it's a pain in the *** as much as i love it. hehe)
Also, i'm a welder we are out here in idaho in our apt no tv :( was at a local bar earlier and watched a little bit of it..... BUT i believe there was a jeep commercial on and i assume TGR produced it..

Snow? No snow here.
Just Beachy.

12/25/09 Update (snow!)

12/25/09 Update

Dumping - just d..d...d....d....d.......Dumping ouside!
Huge white flakes, low visibility with low slung clouds and very little sun penetration.

Well, we had very warm temps yesterday, and very heavvy snow even up high. Temps didn't drop until well into the night. So, a lot of weight has been added to our snowpack. While the snowpack was gaining strength during the drought weeks of January, there remains several TG/Sugar layers that are now more important to be aware of with the added weight.

Surface sluff slides are evident, as well as slab slides breaking at the deeper layers.

I saw a great tag line on a SW member's signature: "If a human is involved in an avalanche, mistakes were made." That pretty much nails it!

Be safe out there, make good terrain choices and enjoy the new snow!

Grooming Report

Greg added the auxillary 65gal tank to our cat - and Turbo (Rick) took advantage of that last night! He groomed EVERYTHING. Ohio Pass, Splains, Rolling Hills, Townsite, Old Kebler, Lost Lake, and the Highway to Erricsson Springs are all groomed - soft bed however with the new fallen snow and warm temps. Thanks, Turbo!!! ...for making it faster/easier to get out to the good stuff.

****************CB Avalanche Center Update********************

Reported Sunday, January 25, 2009 at 6:35 AM

Weather Forecast

Today:
Snow with an additional 5-7". Winds will be strong from the southwest 15-25 mph and highs in the 30's and even warmer in Gunnison.

Tonight:
Snow with 3-6" likely. Southwest winds will continue at higher elevation 10-20 mph and lows will be in the 20's.

Tomorrow:
Snow 2-4" expected. Southwest winds 10-20 mph and highs near 30.

Weather Synopsis

The jet stream has dipped into a more southwest flow and increased in strength, bringing us heavy snow and strong winds yesterday. Temperatures remain warm, and snow density is very high, with lots of water. We will see snow continue through Tuesday, with periods of heavy snowfall. Winds will be strong again today, especially at higher elevations.
In the Backcountry

Yesterday we received more snow and wind than forecasted. A foot of snow fell in town in the past 24 hours, with southwest winds blowing strong, especially above treeline. We received several reports of a tender snowpack hitting the tipping point yesterday afternoon. A remote triggered avalanche (SS-ASr-R2-D2-I) on a south slope of Gothic Mtn broke 400' wide and ran 1000 vertical feet down an approximatly 40 degree slope. As well a skier had a close call on Schuykill Ridge yesterday, taking a ride in a medium sized soft slab avalanche. Both of these slides ran at the new snow/old snow interface. The difference being that on Gothic it ran on an old suncrust and on Schuykill it ran on buried faceted snow. A small natural avalanche was also observed on a steep east facing slope above treeline where a small bit of fresh cornice had collapsed. With continued snow and wind today, we can expect to see natural avalanche activity to begin above treeline, and for human triggered avalanches to be likely as well.

Danger Rating and Travel Advisory
Avalanche Watch

The avalanche danger will be HIGH today on terrain near and above treeline on North through Southeast slopes.

The danger is CONSIDERABLE on all other slopes.

Winds and more snow today will continue to add additional load to the snowpack today. Instabilities are limited to the upper snowpack right now, with failures coming near or just below the new snow. Natural avalanches will be probable to likely today.

Today is a good day to practice avalanche terrain avoidance. Any slope steeper than 30 degrees should be givin a wide berth. Remotely triggering an avalanche will be a distinct possibility, so watch for steeper slopes around you.

Morrill is the Yami/Poo dealer in Gunnison

We have traveled all over the west. This guy is one I will always remember. He has always bent over backwards for us if we needed something. I have been totally impressed. I dont know what he is like with the locals, but for us nothing short of fantastic.

How quick does the parking lot above CB fill up on weekends? do you need to be there early to get a decent spot.

I bought an XTX from Morril recently - and he really came through on that deal. He's certainly a respected part of our local snowmobiling scene, and brings years and years of experience. I'm sure there's some bumps on the road, but so far, so good!

As far as parking - our parking lot continues to shrink as the snow piles up. Gunnison County does a good job of clearing it when the cars leave though. One of the best kept parking secrets is Ohio Creek Trailhead - out of Gunnison turn left on Ohio Creek Rd, and follow it out to the trailhead (~20mi), and you're only 3.5mi from the "Y" where Kebler and Ohio Creek Pass road meet near Irwin. Larger rigs may want to head to CB as turning around at Ohio Creek Trailhead is a bit narrower, but there is lots of parking.

For Kebler - the earlier, the better on weekends - mostly so you can point it towards the exit early, rarely is there no parking - maybe on a spring Sunday once or twice. If you can swing weekdays - there will be you and like only four of us parked there. ;-)

Kebler Pass parking was a complete frickin Zoo Saturday - lots of available parking, but the skiers (single cars) took up like 1/2 of the larger main lot and as a result the trailer parking was screwed up, and some azz-nut gold Ford with a 24' enclosed basically blocked in my rig! Vail Pass: One of your own has strayed, please come retrieve him!

I'm skiing w/ kids today - but it should be a great day in the backcountry!

FreeRide Films - I've met Mike Duffy once or twice, and sat in a brief seminar that he did a few years back. Don't know him well, but he's kind of the Yokozuna of Ave instruction in Colorado.

I'll be in Denver Mon-Wed this week, but hopefully get some riding in Thursday or Friday - I'll PM you contact info. PM Alrevedup - I think he's in town most of the week. Road info at www.cotrip.org

1/26/09 Avalanche Danger: HIGH, 3 feet of new snow

Snow continues!
3 feet fresh over the past few days.
Low clouds, upper 20's/low 30's.

Ave Danger raised to HIGH.
Backcountry travel is NOT advised today.

***************CB Ave Info***************

Weather Synopsis

A surface low pressure system on a southwest flow will continue to bring us good snowfall through Tuesday. A cold front dropping down from the north today will bring a return of more seasonable temperatures tonight, while also fueling more snowfall. Strong southwest winds will continue to blow especially at higher elevations. The flow will return to a drier northwest pattern in the middle of the week, although we could still see orographic showers continue through the end of week.

In the Backcountry

More snow and winds yesterday and last night have continued to load up the snowpack. We have received another 6" of snow in town, 9" at the ski area and 12" on Schofield Pass. We have seen close to three feet of snow in the high country, much of it being wet, high density snow. This new snow is lying over several different older snow layers, and we have seen the new snow slide easily off of buried sun crusts, as well as failing on weak faceted snow. Reports of collapsing and cracking as well as recent skier triggered avalanches indicate an unstable snowpack in many areas. With the load we have currently on the pack and more snow and wind in the forecast, we will likely see avalanche activity continue today and tomorrow.

Weather Forecast
Today:
More snow with 4-7 inches possible. Strong southwest winds gusting to 30 mph and highs near 30 valley wide.

Tonight:
Continuing snow 3-5" expected. Moderate winds moving to the northwest and lows near 0 in CB and Gunny.

Tomorrow:
Snow with 3-5" possible. Northwest winds 10-20 mph and highs near 20.

Danger Rating and Travel Advisory

The danger is HIGH on all slopes steeper than 30 degrees today.

Although unlikely, there is a chance the weight of the snow snow avalanching could step down into weak layers near the ground. If this does occur, we can expect to see the resulting avalanche be VERY large and VERY destructive.

Backcountry travel is not recomended today. Natural avalanches are LIKELY on all slopes ssteeper then 30 degrees. Remember even if you are in the valley floor, be aware of steeper slopes around you which could avalanche.

Greg and I were going to go out last night but we aborted the grooming run

Greg was at the trail head and called to say it was a white out

with av. dangers high today might be a good day to go to work

Maybe someone with some extra time on their hands should change the oil in the BR2K:face-icon-small-win

conditions should be better by the time the multi-club ride roles around this weekend
