Answer will vary.....track length, rider weight, riding style, altitude, clutching, and many other variables. 19/39. 19/41 are common. :beer;

It also depends on if youre able to use your stock chain or not . Just gears can cost up to $130 ish for a pair . With a chain it may be around $250 . The 19/42 combo is quite common on the IQ chassis but mostly because the chain and chaincase they come with will fit that gear ratio .

If you are running a 72 pitch chain right now, you will need a new chain (74) to go to 19-41 or 42. I think stock was 19-39 with 72p. You should be able to get a polaris chain and a 41t gear for about $150.

I believe stock is 19/39 with a 72 pitch chain. I put 19/43 on my 04 700, had to use a 74 pitch chain. I geared it down because I went from a 144 to a 159. I put a ad on here and got a TEAM gear for $40 and a chain for $30. Be patient and look around, should find something in good condition.

You would have to go smaller on top. An 18t or even 17t will work, but most feel it puts too much bend in the chain. You can run a 17-41 to have a 2.41 ratio, or something inbetween and still use the 72p chain.

I am not saying you should go to this setup, but only saying it is possible if you are set against buying a chain. I would pony up for the 74p (about $85) and buy a 41-42-43 bottom depending on your weight and riding style. To answer your question;a 17-41 would give unreal bottom end, with a top speed in the low to mid seventies.

I run 18?42 on my girlfriend's sled which is a 700 with a 151 also equivilant to a 19/43 and it's good imo it is also personal prefarance depending on what you ride.

You'd be a fool to run a 17 tooth top gear. I wouldn't even put a 18 tooth top gear in a sled either, the chain can't even run the radius of an 18 tooth so you are never engaging half the teeth, that'd be less than 9 teeth engaging the chain.

Also, a 19/41 is a bad ratio... think about it, it's a 2.15 gear ratio and you have to use a 74 pitch chain. OK, I can run 20/43 and get a 2.15 ratio still using a 74 pitch chain, the only difference is the 20 tooth top gear obviously engages more chain which makes it more durable and less wear but also picking up gear teeth means less chain slack.

If you want to run the stock 72 pitch chain, then a 19/40 ratio= 2.10, going to a 74 pitch you can run 20/43=2.15. Each set-up has it's own negatives, 19 is still kind of a low top gear, but a 43 bottom is the max and if you do have excessive driveshaft flex the gear/chain on the bottom can occasionally rub the inside of the chaincase. I haven't run into problems from this but it is disconcerning to see during maintenance.
