Better Gas Mileage?

Sled is an '01 rmk 700...I would like it if someone could give me some pointers on how I can achieve better fuel economy. Right now I can only get about 50 miles to a tank while 3 other 800's I rode with the other day had plenty to spare after the same ride. My jets are at 340 mag 320 pto and the needles are set one notch away from the top. I dropped the needles cause I was getting some popping when I ran it the second time I ever went out on this machine and the elevation was about 7000+ feet. Also would like to know why the mains are always 20 sizes apart usually. I'm usually running 6000'-9000' I'd appreciate some good input here. Thanks

I just can't understand why I'm getting such terrible gas mileage. My jetting seems to be spot on. I've considered lowering the mains a bit but I would prefer to be a little more on the rich side, just to be safe. There's no obvious explanation for this...

I can't say for sure on the 700's but I am very familar with the 800's so I am assuming they are prtty much the same. My 01 800 came with 55 pilot jets and the needle in the 3rd clip from the top. It ran fat on the bottom end into the mid. Most everyone rode them like this as they did run and did not foul plugs out usually. I ran 35 pilots and moved the needle to the 2nd from top. This cleaned up the bottom end a ton and the throttle response was night and day. The other big one is what you are looking for, those that I rode with that were stock or even with leaner mains than I, would run out of gas when I still had 2-3 gals left even though I put on more miles than them generally and rode harder then them! I made this same change to my wifes 2000 800 and a couple of freinds 2001 800's, all with the same results. The stock main jets were right on for this sled, it was the bottom that was/is using all the extra fuel. Hope this helps you.

You should do a lot better mileage than that. BUT - All else being equal an 800 with VES will get better mileage than an '01 700 that does not have VES (I own one of each)......The VES prevents a lot of unburned fuel from escaping out the exhaust.......

I do about 8-9 MPG on my 700 and somewhere where between 11-14 on my 800 - All depending on conditions.......
