Belt deflection - how to know if belt is worn out

Hi guys,

When i first got my sled the belt deflection was way off from the dealer - super loose belt.. loss of performance.

I tighetened the deflection by loosening the allen screw on the secondary. I got a nice running tight belt but without having a squeal or the sled wanting to lurch forward.

I was looking at it again and it seems the screw is so loose that it's actually not touching the sheeve in there at all and therefore doing nothing.

Is it normal that my belt doesn't run too tight since the screw isn't doing anything?

I'm going to put the screw back in to the point where i feel like it's touching the sheeve and then tighten the jam nut.

Is my belt just too warn out now that it doesn't sit too tight with the screw all the way out?

Thanks,
Mike

Yes.

Its just time for a new belt. Its also fine that the screw doesnt touch the sheave, if thats where it needs to be for the correct deflection then thats OK. You could run it like that until you get a new belt. Even with the correct deflection, the narrower your belt gets, the more performance you are giving up. Eric

Crazy that I already need a new belt.. I think I have like 350 miles on it haha

Being too loose from the start was not good for it.

I would also switch to the gates carbon belt and you will double the belt life for half the money. Gates 45C4553

Ok that makes alot of sense -

looking into the Gates belt now thanks!

If you haven't torn a cord out then I doubt that you wore your belt out in 350 miles. These belts do glaze up and stretch a bit causing them to be loose, seems to happen in the first 100 miles or so. Large tolerances on clutch clearances can cause this. Check how much actual adjustment you have with a new Polaris belt. Also guys around here aren't seeing much life out of the gates belts in the deep
