509 Goggles / Klim F4 Combo -- First Impression

Unfortunatley I don't think this is a good combo :(

Nothing at all against either item, I just don't think they go together particularly well :(

The reason being, the 509 goggles leave a little too much 'free space' on your face when used with the F4 .... below your eyes, and right on your forehead.

I was wearing a thin Klim hood with this combo today in relativley warm temperatures (35 degrees or so), and I used to use this same hood with my HJC/Scott combo, with the hood pulled down around my chin so I could breathe.... I could not do this with the 509/F4 combo because it left bare skin open to the wind ... the 509 goggles have a little bit smaller footprint than some other googles I am guessing, and I was catching wind right below my eyes and most specifically my forehead.

I pulled the hood up around my mouth, and the wind below the eyes was cured, but I froze my forehead off :(

This could potentially be solved by wearing a thicker hood underneath, I will have to wait till next weekend to try that for sure...

Again, please don't read this as a knock against the F4 of the 509 goggles (goggles really do seem very good IMO just not the best fit for the F4), I just don't think this combination work particularly well together..

And no, the snow building up in my Klim vents didn't cause my head to get soaked today, so I guess i'm not really worried about that ... but yes, snow does kinda build up on them.

On this note:

The Scott 89's fit almost perfectly in the ToBe helmet.

wore my 509 goggles out riding at night at 14 degrees temp and no foggin up or freezin lens, worked great!!!! no complaints here!

on my way home from rabbit ears today I rode again ...

unbelievably, right outside vernal in some fields where we normally ride quads at.

I bet there's been a foot of snow dumped in town here in the last day.

Anyways, I put my thicker hood on and I think that solved the problem.

I was getting more fresh snow in this field over my hood than I did where I was at RE earlier today, and my head stayed dry the whole time cept for me sweating trying to get a buddy out of a ravine hahaha...

But, I don't think the F4 will have issues with wetness if you use the right liner with it ....

I'll give the 509's a try with the thicker hood I had on this evening next weekend and post about it, I have a feeling it will be the cure.

The 509's fit perfectly with the ToBe helmet. Only exposed skin when wearing a balaclava is the tip of your nose. Might be a little chilly below -30C but should be fine in anything warmer.

Spy Omega's fit perfect with the F4. Just fyi

I don't spose you might be able to take a pic from the front and the side with that would ya?

I'd kinda like to compare how it looks to the 509's before I drop any money on it :);)

Spy Targa 2 fits perfectly in the F4.

I found that the dry snow tends to blow out of the vents rather easily on the f4. Heavy wet snow may be different... but we dont get that here in utah...

My Oakley's tend to let air in around the temples with my 2X HJC melon head helmet. Would 509's help that? Can I still use quick straps with them?

Are you using the nose insert that comes with the helmet?

If you install that, the nose and cheeks are completely protected. As good as a neopreme Fog Face.

I've using mine for a bit now and have found it to be the best frostbite protection I've had (HJC's before). It's a funny feel on your head 'cause it's so light and has a extra large shell. You get use to it.
I like that the vents clog a bit, otherwise I'd need to tape them up. You can have too much airflow over your noggin' in the winter.
Can't wait to use it in the hot summer. It'll be cool to be cool.

It is light. My large is a c hair under 3lb with winter package in. My vintage CF HJC (new ones feel heavier) is 3.39 lb. That 1/2 lb is quite noticeable bobing around up there.

Maybe you didn't get the winter package???

Yes, I've been using the 509's with the snap-in breath deflector and the 'wind stopper' liner ... it still leaves open skin under my eyes and on my forehead. I have the 2XL size helmet but I don't think that matters.

I will try using my thicker hood the next time, I am hoping that solves the problem, because I really like these 509 goggles.

welp.

I rode Saturday and Sunday with fresh snow falling and enough powder to catch many a face full of it (no base built up yet but we did have about a foot of fresh pow) ...

The vents on the helmet are definatley not an issue. My head was dry the whole time.

I wore my thicker hood both days ... If I really horse around with my hood pulling it down around my forehead and out from the sides of my eyes, I can get it to work ok with the 509's .... but if all I do is put the lid on and go, I catch entirley too much wind on my upper cheeks right below my eyes using the 509's ...

Again, please don't take this as a knock against the 509 goggles. They are a very good pair of goggles, the visibility with them is excellent and they almost never fogged on it....the chrome/orange tint lens is the best I've ever used....it's like the best of both worlds betweek clear and amber. Works well in overcast or sunny conditions very well..

However, I think that for the F4 helmet the goggles are just too small :(

They don't have a big enough footprint to cover the face of the helmet without you catching wind on your bare skin ...

It really sucks cuz I like these goggles, but I'm thinking I'm gonna get another pair of Scott Turbo-Flo's .... I have two pairs of those for my old helmet and they are properly sized for the F4....

Sucks though because they definatley don't seem to be as good of googles as the 509's but they will keep my cheeks from being totally wind-frozen :(
