February 26, 2018 Alpine, WY Snow Report Rockin' M Ranch

February 26, 2018 Alpine, WY Snow Report Rockin' M Ranch
It started snowing pretty good this morning. I will get back with totals when it is all done. I have received several reports in the last couple of days. **Slide update**. The Forest Service has created a detour up and around the slide at mile 17. You will come to a bush marked by a bunch of orange marking tape and then follow a trail around the slide. It is a narrow trail through the trees with some small climbs. A little tricky, and you probably don't want to take grandma on it. The same group also went to Blind Bull using the original route up Blind Bull road. They said that was a piece of cake. The trail is groomed from both directions from the slide and all in the group easily made it around the slide. They said the riding was great at Blind bull. A foot of fresh on a firm base. That was before todays storm. The coming days should be awesome up there. I also received reports that McCain meadows had great snow, especially the Bull Hollow Area. In all this has been a strange winter and has received much bad press regarding the snow conditions and avalanche conditions. This is a year that the larger steep aspects are better left alone. The overall snow conditions have really turned around in the last two weeks. The winter is BACK TO NORMAL. The roads and parking lots in Alpine are snow covered again. There is plenty of snow to get around the valley floor. The temps have been below freezing for the last 2-3 weeks. The snowpack over 8000 feet is over 100%. I know many have written this winter off, for they think there is no snow. I get calls all the time with people worried. Looking out my window, it looks like it should for late February. The next few weeks will be the best riding of this season. I encourage anyone that has been riding in our area to post their own pictures and reports here.
Thanks for reading....Rob

Just got back from three days at the box y, 16th year of being up there. Great snow up high, easily one of the better years. Detour over the slide was pretty easy to get over. Well worth the trip up there.

March 3, 2018 Alpine, WY Snow Report

March 3rd, 2018 Alpine, WY Snow Report Rockin' M Ranch
Well we are now receiving the Snow that we wished we would have received in mid-January. Another 6" here at the cabins in the last 24 hours. Ski area reports and snotels look like about a foot of new up high. Temps remain below freezing. This snow plus last weeks reports of over the hood powder should mean great riding. The Idaho side should have plenty of snow for some great boondocking and more stable snow packs, although conditions have improved tremendously for the Salt River and Wyoming ranges. The BTNF avalanche report is at moderate. BTNF general advisory below:

Snowfall rates, ridgetop winds and temperatures all decreased overnight. As the day progresses, light snowfall will continue, and ridgetop winds will increase slightly. The chance for skiers and riders to trigger small to large wind slabs may increase through the day in leeward terrain above 8,500 feet. Be on the lookout for an unexpected loading event, and be willing to back off of travel objectives if conditions warrant. The chance lingers for backcountry travelers to trigger large to very large persistent deep slab avalanches in some areas above 7,500 feet. Below 7,500 feet, the snowpack is mostly stable and avalanches are unlikely.

March 4, 2018 Alpine, WY Snow Report Rockin' M Ranch

March 4th, 2018
This year we got March in January and January in March. A solid 12" of snow in the places that I hadn't plowed since last week. Ski resorts are reporting another 12" over night. Our local snotels look about the same amount of new with Blind Bull and Willow Creek going over 90". The elevations under 7500 which were a little slim a month ago, now have plenty and are substantially more avalanche stable than the high country. It was a slow and strange start to this winter. Conditions are excellent as of now. Don't right of this winter yet. Plenty of good snow left. Over the hood powder to be found if you were here tomorrow. Temps are predicted to stay cool. Here are a few shots around the Rockin' M today.

Was out there last week. It was sunny all week, until Friday, where they picked up about 4 inches in the mountains. No new snow in the valley and it's melting fast, but trails are all still accessible. We found the best snow around Commissary. There was also some good snow in Blind Bull and around the Salt River range, but you gotta know where to go to get off of the beaten path. We didn't make it to the Idaho side, assuming it's not very good.

The Forest Service did pull the stakes at the Gray's River slide, but just at the main trail. They left the stakes thru the trees. It's passable, but you better be AT LEAST an intermediate rider. There's one spot early on that is worn to the rocks, steep and slippery. The trail is about a 1/4 mile before the slide, on the left(up the mountain). You'll see a bunch of tracks going up it. The slide at Blind Bull lake is much easier to get around.

There is some new snow forecast for this weekend, so hopefully you'll hit it at the right time. Enjoy!

Bright and Sunny and 40 degrees. Spring riding is here. Idaho side was great a few days ago yet warm weather may have settled it. Yes the Greys River road is closed. The concern is that the slide may dam the river and possibly break sending a wall of water down the canyon. Who knows what will happen, but the whole deal is pretty crazy. Hopefully it will all be sorted out this summer and an alternate route will permanently established for next winter.
This video is pretty awesome showing the slide:https://www.facebook.com/sam.cook.7545/videos/10155252899675404/?id=100000241730949

Were preparing for a nice 15-25” Dump in the big horns. That’s on top of a really nice base right now. I was up today.
