2012 M8: Cracked my heat exchanger! Need input please!!!

Soo....I have a nice softball size dent in my cooler between the track/drivers and the motor. Not up on the cooler on the tunnel. I'm just wondering if anyone has done this replacement on their own before. Do you have to replace the cooler all the way from front by motor all the way to rear of tunnel, or is it two separate pieces? Need to pull the motor or can you just pull it from track side??

Any pointers are welcome. Could really use some input on this one.

It is one piece... Engine can stay, but the chain case and everything else has to come out. You should consider an HCR cooler upgrade while your in there. If you can drill rivets and install new ones, I see no reason why a normal guy with some DIY motivation couldn't accomplish this.

You need to remove suspension, track, driveshaft, oil tank and chaincase cover, brake assembly, and clutches. It is about a 6 or 7 hour job. It is not bad, just takes time. I have a take-off HCR short heat exchanger if you are needing a deal on one.

Yeah I've done top ends and turbo installs but just thought I'd gather some opinions and info before dabbling. Never had to pull one of these.

What's the advantage to upgrading to a HCR cooler? Wouldn't a shorter cooler be less effective?

Sounds like you have more than enough skill to tackle this project:face-icon-small-win

Do a quick search on here but the general consensus is they carry much less snow, which equates to less riding weight. Also, unless your strictly riding miles of hard pack, they won't overheat. If you run a bunch of hard pack just throw the ice scratchers down.

We spend most our time lost in the trees and pushing powder. Haha.

How do they hold less snow though if they're a smaller cooler?? I'll do a search but I'm just curious as to how. I would certainly do it if Racinstation has a good deal ;)

The short cooler doesn't heat up the tunnel therfore no snow sticks to ur running boards or tunnel
After riding the short cooler, i can't ride another sled with a long cooler

Yeah I did some reading. Makes total sense now. Almost glad I cracked my long cooler. Well....minus rebuilding the entire f**king motor just to pour coolant in and watch it hit the concrete.
