Default Northern New Brunswick Riding Conditions 2018+

So we are going to retire the old NB riding conditions thread. Photobucket ruined it, but going forward, will either use SW or a real photo provider website.

If you want to go back to the old thread....use this:

https://www.snowest.com/forum/showthread.php?t=352549

2018 has been our best year EVER....EVER...EVER!!! Just to summarize:

December and January were both stormy months. We had snow followed by rain a few times, but on balance we had a big base. February followed with more snow and the base continued to grow and bury the early ice layers. Conditions were very good pretty much all February.

Then March arrives...and voila...two Nor'Easters dump 3 feet with a third on the way. I would estimate our snow pack at 6 - 8 feet and the top 3 feet are absolute fluff.

The other big difference this year is the snow pack is very widespread, so lots of places to play.

Clear cuts are buried deep and are as safe as they can be and with a solid layer buried way down in the snow pack, traction is good. It is really "hero" snow...pretty hard to get stuck if you are tactical.

Where we go from here...who knows...but tons of paddle tracks travelling to our area from all over the Maritimes ...so word has gotten out.

For comparison....IMO...Gaspe is probably behind us on snow conditions right now.

Going to be a big week

March 18, 2018 Update: Wednesday's Nor'Easter 3 Drops 80cm's!!!

Just back from ride yesterday, and to say we have snow is an understatement. The main east west highway from Bathurst is Provincial Route 180...aka "the road to resources" that goes through the spine of NB, and all its mountain peaks. Well yesterday, it resembles a luge run, with banks in excess of 8 feet and in places over 10 feet. Most of the snow has dumped between Bathurst and west towards Upsalquich River (where it begins to taper off) and south of Rte 180. We didn't get past Governors/Popple Depot heading southwest (Christmas Mountains) so can't comment on conditions there, but I suspect very similar.

The last storm dumped close to 80cm's....it came early as wet snow and late in the storm it dried out. So we now have 50cm's of firm snow with about 15-30cm's of pow on top. No ice or crust in this one at all.

So another round of hero snow. You can climb, pick through the trees and explore with full confidence you won't get buried, but enough freshy to allow you to carve.

My pic's...anything off of trail 22 and 503. Just find your area.

Forecast looks OK for next week or so, but it is starting to get late for big dry snow storms, but we should have wicked spring conditions whenever they show up.

Bottom line is the conditions are fantastic right now and there is so much snow everything is basically covered. The only risky areas will be where wind scour erodes the base, so any exposed west facing slopes should be traversed carefully. Anything leeward or protected is the way to go.....which is pretty much our standard operating conditions.

Enjoy.

March 31st: 30cm's coming wednesday!!!!

Looks like more snow coming Wednesday. Sure it will be wet....but at this point it's all good.

We are just starting spring conditions and it will be slow as next week remains cold. Good news is that snow pack is still huge and if it finally warms up a bit..... it's going to get really good.

I'd say 3 weeks left easily.......but time will tell.

Quick Update: 20-35cm's coming Tomorrow and another 10 on Friday....more after that.

Winter refusing to loosen its grip. Looks like the western deep freeze is setting up a persistent snow pattern for the east.

Also staying reasonably cool with spits of 5 - 10 cms all next week on top of the big snowfall tomorrow and Friday

Heading out on the weekend to sample, but conditions remain excellent for exploring. Still too cold and setup to carve but that should change with new snow depending on what happens

Best riding conditions of the year. Bring your sun glasses and dark tint goggles...LOL

April 9th Update....More Snow!

Wednesday's storm dropped 15-20 and Saturday another 5 or so it's getting harder and harder to shovel down to camp door.....but it's now heading for spring snow, albeit slowly. Can explore anywhere but forget carving until it warms up.

Next weekend looks warm and sunny so hoping the snow will soften.

I would estimate we will be sledding in June this year as temperatures remain below normal.

Get out there if you can.
