Ski doo Summit Shocks JUNK???

So a friend of mine who is not on the forum sent his shocks off his 2012 summit X to be revalved to a reputable shock builder. Either way the sled only has 1000 miles on it and the shock builder told him that the oil was way dirty and that the shocks were not charged fully. Is this something that likely happens? They did not revalve them for him because they think he may like them now that they are right. Also he sent in all 4 and they found the same all the way around? So whats the deal? Those shocks built on friday or just junk after 1000 miles. This was 1000 miles in the mountains so not like he was ditch banging with the thing.

Must have been a one off with some Cat shocks for some reason.:face-icon-small-blu

I am not fishing. I am trying to figure out what is going on? I used to be a doo guy and would be again if doo would just release the sled I want. 1200T in a summit. So just a FYI not here fishing or picking at doo I just want to try to help him out cause IMO the shocks should not be needing a rebuild in that short of time.

i would hope the shocks were just a bad set. i can easily put 2-3k a season on a sled...

See my thoughts exactly. This friend of mine has back issues so he was hoping to have them revalved to meet his needs a bit more but the shock place told him he should try them with good oil and fully charged first. So i am assuming that they felt that the shocks likely were never quite right?

No. Ski Doo stock shocks have always been crap. I generally ride on stock for two weeks until maftermarket ones come in, then sell them to a guy whose stock shocks failed.

That, IMO is BRPs weak spot. They just don't use a good shock. KYB doesn't make a good shock, even the dirt shocks are junk.

BRP is recomending to change oil at 1000 miles when new and every 2000 miles after that, in my opinion the KYB shocks is in general a good and durable shock. There have been cases of shocks not being fully charged from factory but it is not the standard. The oil they come with from factory is also not the best so after the first service they are in general working very well.
They are by no means the best shock on the market but compared to other stock offerings they work very well.

Absolutely not....the Doo X shocks are junk after 500 miles.

Well good to know. I will pass on the info. I was trying to get him to go with a set of exits. But we will see if these shocks feel any better now.

Exits are great shocks. I love mine, you cant go wrong there!. As a shock guy, I cant count how many stock doo shocks I have rebuilt with around 500 miles that had little to no nitrogen left in them. I did some work on my friends that were almost new and they were way low on nitrogen. My dealer said there was a couple of years that the shocks were shipped out low from the factory. As far as how often they need service, the stock shocks w/out reservoirs need service more frequently due to less oil volume (oil will get hotter faster causing the oil to break down faster). Here is some service info off zbroz web site on how frequent to service.

"Service work for your shocks is like changing oil in your car. It needs to be done on a regular basis. Every season is a good rule of thumb. More for those racing or riding a lot."

Well I helped my friend put the shocks back on his sled tonight. I would have to say if my memory serves me right that the shocks felt no where near this firm last year when he picked up the sled last year. So I suspect that they were never right.

I bought an '11 XP and hated the shocks from new, I put on some Floats and it was much nicer.

You guys actually like the floats on the skidoo? Floats get such mixed reviews so I am surprised.

It seems you guys are all talking about the front shocks? the skid shocks are probably the same?? im currently finishing up putting my new 36 front end on then ripping off the tunnel shocks to have them filled. i have a feeling they are blown out. its been 3 years since i have even touched them :(

Really KYB dirt bike shocks and forks are crap too? Funny their stuff has always worked really well before.

Fact is shocks are built to a manufacturer's specifications period. Shock for shock a KYB will keep the oil cleaner longer and has better internal components then Fox shocks.

What about a revalve of the X package shocks?
Fett Brother's stage one revalve is $249 plus springs and shipping = $325ish

There are other guys out there that are even cheaper.

I really like the Fox evol R's but at $1000? oofdah!

BAD SHOCKS

just removed both of my rear shocks on my 08 summit x. the rebound is extremely slow. i push the rod in and it takes a long time for it to raise back up. Does this mean i just need them refilled or complete new shocks? I heard you can rebuild them but how would i know if that is needed or not? any help? they are the x package shocks

Depends what shock you're comparing. I've had Float II's and now have Evol R's. The R's are much nicer with the extra volume. I have them on a 1200T and have been very happy with them. Came off a set of Exit's on the same machine and prefer the Evol's.

Rebuilt the Evol's this year at 2000 miles and rebuilder was surprised at how clean the oil was in them.

You can spend any amount on a shock. If it's not valved and setup properly they all perform the same.
