136" Track Any Good in the West

Hello everyone (first post)! I currently have a 99' Summit 670x with a lightweight hood, can, and a couple other little things. However it has the stock 136" track. My question is since I just moved to the Portland area, how will this sled be in the mountains, especially with the newer larger sleds? Funds are a little low so going to a newer sled and larger track aren't going to be options until next year. I like a little hillclimbing but mainly powder riding and going through the trees. Any input is appreciated. Thanks

You will be stuck lots and you might out highmark a stock phaser but if that is what you have then who cares. Just get out and have some fun, there are lots of people up there riding short track machines. The whole point is that at least you will be riding, have fun!

my opinion is if you are an aggressive rider, you will blow peoples minds. I have never (until this year) owned anything longer than 136. I have always been able to keep up and then some to larger sleds.Momentum is your firend.

If you are not aggressive, you will dig. but hey if your not digging, you are not trying hard enough.

Well said.

But after one season you'll probably want to upgrade.

In 99 136 was a long track. As long as you have 1 3/4 paddles or bigger you'll do OK.You're not gonna hi mark a newer sled but remember what you're riding.Friends and a shovel are key as well as a beacon and probe pole and knowledge to use it

We ride out of Salem and the 136" was plenty. Granted many have gone longer and they are beneficial several days a year but a 136" will get you where most go on most days.

Welcome to Oregon.

I agree. I rode a 1999 Summit X with a 136" track for the first year and got around pretty good by keeping the hammer down. The following year I upgraded to a 2006 Summit X 800 with a 151" track and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I sold that 1999 Summit X to my brother and he rode it for a year, and just bought himself a 2004 Summit X 151" last month. If you ride out West you WILL be upgrading!!

I ride a 800 renegade rev and go everywhere the 144's and 151's go and I like it because it makes you a better rider. Plus I'm always the first to the good stuff outta the parking lot because the short tracks handle a lot better on the trails.

a 136 will work GREAT with that sled- I just changed my 97 summit out to a 151 2 years ago, but I could keep up w/my old man's 151 700 doo on most days. The only thing was going thru the trees slow in fluff- a 151 is WAY more forgiving than a 136.

I converted my 99 RMK from 136 to 155 for under $ 500.00 I never regreted it! The 136" is the dodo bird. I doubt you can buy a Mnt. sled with that track anymore. Try a season stock save your $s swap out next summer.

IT all depends on how deep the snow is. If you're riding in 3 ft plus of fresh fluff you're going to have to work your *** off and you might hate life a little. But on the next day when that snow sets up a little it won't be as bad and if you're a good rider you should be able to keep up.

I bought a 900 1m 151 a few years ago and I still have my 99x. When my X was my primary sled I was able to hang (90% of the time) with quite a few 151 & 159's as long as the pow was not too fresh & deep. A lot of it is rider ability and determination. If my 900 were out of order, I wouldn't hesitate to take the X on the 1200 mile round trip to the Snowy Range.

I ride a X-fire with a 136" track and I love it! It is so much more manuverable then the longer sleds. I ride with guys with 153" and 162" and keep up just fine. It sometimes calls for some track poaching to get into some areas but who cares.

i had a 99 rmk 700 with a 136 for my first 2 years in the mountains. it as great. the group i rode with all had 136's. we got to all the places and had a blast, we just weren't setting any himarks. but that's not all that matters. we had fun, and i think it made me be a better rider, cause i had to work a lot harder to get everywhere. i have a 159 now, and wouldn't go back, but also wouldn't trade the experience i got from the 136

The guys have been on my case about getting a longer track, I ride w/ a 136, and if your a rider, you can show those boys a thing or too, on our little short tracks. It's all about the monentum my friend. They still cannot believe what I am capable of, at least your riding, better than steering the couch!
