What's the best town to live in for riding?

I live in north of Mancos, CO little town of about 1000 people, now the rural area is growing hand over fist. Rico is 45 minutes away if you like the steep and I mean steep and deep, I would not go with out a someone who knows the area one wrong turn and you are at a cliff. Transfer gets beat to death by trail riders but when you finally get there and know where to go it is not bad. Wolf creek is 2 hours from here and Silverton is about 1.5 hours, once again don't leave the trail unless you know you can get back. My buddies and I hike ride horses all summer long in these places (except wolf creek)so we know how to get out of a hole if we can not get back to the top.

If you like to ski Durango mountain is 1 hour from here, Telluride is 1 to 1.5 hours from here.

I am not worried about people riding up all the snow here. I see probably 100 different riders a year and I know of 6 or 7 that would even dare to go to the "good" stuff.

I am over the ridge to the east of you. 13 miles to the top of Red Mtn Pass, far and away some of the most extreme terrian any sledder could wish for. There are about 8 of us that ride the area, thousands of square miles. The measuring stick at the parking lot reads 11 ft right now, the top three is the lightest dryest powder you ever did see. No decent way to make a living, we like to call it poverty with a view, wouldn't trade it for anything.

I agree with wweverett, if you really like to ride Mancos is the best town to live in. Tons of different places to ride, lots of groomed trails for the conservative riders and some really extreame areas as well.

Here's some pictures from last year and there are more on my website http://www.wyattwestranch.com

No where in Utah. It's terrible here, no good places to live to be able to ride.

Yeah, I'd have to agree! We NEVER get any snow here and if you can manage to find an open area, it's so crowded that its pointless to ride! Your best bet might be CO. or ID. I hear they are looking for a bunch of people to carve up all that untouched powder. If you need a map I'll be glad to help you find one.
I'm just looking out for your best interests.

Most of the places posted are new to me. I would like to visit them.

The San Juan mountains in Southern Colorado are amazing, extreme and buried with snow. Ouray is a beautiful town. Some friends took us to eat at The Bon Ton last weekend. That was a good meal.

I haven't been to too many places outside of utah but I would say logan utah there is great riding in almost every direction.

You all have nice places to stay...

I live in a Big City. It has a major international airport 15 minutes from my house.
I also have an NBA team, Minor league hockey, triple AAA baseball, Major league soccer team, two awesome colleges, and arena football team sporting events to attend.
Golf courses are every other block and for $20 for 18 holes you cant beat the price for the quality of courses.
We have a strong economy (read you can actually make money) and so many restaurants and clubs to attend its stupid. (for you :beer; drinkers our laws suck)
Outside of california we have some of the best looking women in the world
Neighbors are really friendly for the most part with crime rates way lower compared to other cities of the same size.
I can be riding in 20 minutes from my house, and have 5 world class sledding areas in less than an hour. Did i mention we average 500" of snow a year?
Water skiing and other summer activities are plentiful, not to mention world class hunting...

on second thought forget i said anything...
Denver is awesome!!! ;)

apperently you have not seen much of New Mexico there are alot of worse places than Farmington. Damn its cold in Gunny during the winter . I have said for years that gunnison reminds me of Farminton w/o the Indians

-40 fahrenhiet at 7:05am this morning in Gunnison and it is up to -11 now at 2:05pm.

I was in the Pagosa/Durango/Sivlerton/Ouray areas this weekend and it was deep and nice and not far from Farmington.

Farmington is still in New Mexico, but mighty close to some steller Mountains

Western Montana

I live between Missoula and Seeley Lake in Potomac Mt.

If you live in or near mountains that get snow you live in the right place!

From here we are close to so many excellent places to snowmobile:

LOLO - MT / Idaho Border
Seeley Lake - (twice rated 6th in the nation by snowmobile mags)
Cooke City / Yellowstone county - (not Yellowstone park)(listed in top 3 spots numerous times in Snow mags) mags)
Lincoln - (x home of the unibomber)
Idaho - right next store (about 60 miles from Missoula)
...and so many more mountain ranges........

Take your pick and yes I wish I knew more about other states also......

Spokane rocks for sledders, 509 fils, extreme team, why do you think they are around here. Mt Spokane, Mt Calispel, Mt Baldy all with 45 minutes drive. 2 hours straight north and I am in Castlegar BC riding area, unreal. 5 hours north and I am riding Revy. 5 hours south and I am in McCall. 1 Hour east an I am at lookout point in ID.

We are truly spoiled here for sledding.

AK for sure baby!!!

O.K. first some backround. I grew up in southern Colorado, just outside Durango. I worked at the Durango mountain resort, ( was Purgatory back then). I have family in Montana that we visited often, and we drove through Idaho and Wyomng all the time. Now granted, I didn't get to sled all those places, colo and nm mainly but know the areas. I moved to the last frontier aka Alaska years ago and have never looked back! Turnagain, lost lake, Whittier, Valdez (thompson pass), Cantwell, Petersville and the list goes on. Now the downside. This place is so big and so much of it remote, I'm sure there are places here that would make any sledder drool that no one has ever been or can't easily get to. I cant get any of my pics to load, all to big but check out this link.. Just my .02 guess I'm kinda biased though.. All those place soud awesome, just had to stick up for ol AK..:beer;:D

your doorstep.Absolutely no crowds, you can go all day without seeing anyone.
best sledding tons of snow

How is the riding near Craig, CO? There is a job opening there that I could possibly transfer too. What's the real estate market like there?

I know your trying to be funny and all but it really is true. You don't want to live and ride anywhere in the cascades. The snow.... Yah you get a lot, but It sucks. No comparison to anything listed so far. I lived and grew up in Oregon and have never looked back. I remember getting 35-40" overnight, and it would feel like you were wading through sand.

Plus, Living in Bend/Redmond, you get to deal with all the 'Eddie Bauer' crowd. Bunch of snotty nosed yuppies for the most part. A few good peeps, but not many. IMHO

...and were all glad you moved.LOL.jk:)
anyway.i remember seeing a pic of OT"s house on here with the mountains in the background.sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

45 to 50 minutes to Steamboat. The ears, buff pass, Hahn's peak, the Flat Tops are all within an hour drive. Black mountain is 15 minutes away. Housing market is great right now but rising with all the oil drilling going on. Still the best prices in the area. A blue collar working class town with plenty of decent people without the resort hype of Steamboat.
