Sno Scoot axle/ driveshaft

I now have available (via my brother who is a mechanical engineer as well as a licensed tool and die maker AND a licensed machinist)brand new freshly machined SnoScoot axle/driveshafts. This is a direct replacement for OEM Yamaha part # 85G-47511-00-00.

This axle will fit all model years 1988-1990. This came out of a request I made to him when the splines stripped on the axle of my son's scoot which most of your are familiar with on here. He reverse engineered the original axle and produced one for me. As he became aware this was a common problem on scoots he made a limited production run of 10. Many of you have likely seen the hydraulic disc brake mod bracket he has made and sells as well for the scoot

This axle is designed to transfer all of the original components from your worn out axle onto this one provided they are in good working order. This axle is machined from 1045 CRS medium carbon steel which is equivalent to the original and treated with a corrosion resistant polymer based coating. The drive splines are precision cut on a 4-axis CNC vertical machining center. Every axle is machined to tight tolerance and tested for spline fitment, bearing fitment and thread accuracy to ensure high quality standards. The square shaft machined tolerances allow for the plastic drive cogs to be reused as well by allowing a tight press fit onto the new axle. 100% fully tested on a SnoScoot.

The original axles were prone to failure due to a condition known as ‘corrosion fretting’ which occurred between the transmission drive gear and the axle splines. The corrosion grit and dust continued to grind away at the splines. This occurred due to the fact that grease was not applied before fitment during the factory manufacturing process. This condition gradually gets worse until the splines start to slip and become completely stripped preventing the track from turning altogether.

These axles are obsolete from Yamaha and there are no known aftermarket replacements until now.

Seemed like a 1" hex shaft might have been better as the small square drivers in a 2.52" pitch are getting hard to find as well.

Nice looking unit though.

Yeah, change the shaft to a hex and you will sell a lot more of these. I have a mold drawn to make square shaft drivers but haven't got any further.

Hey guys, awesome website here on SnoWest! I decided to join as I am the person who is machining the Snoscoot axle / driveshaft. My brother had previously posted them for me but I think it is easier for me to join and post on my own as they have generated quite a bit of interest.

Regarding the Snoscoot square shaft axle, I’ve machined this to be an exact replacement for the original Yamaha part # 85G-47511-00-00. This axle allows for reuse of all the original parts on a worn axle including swapping over the cogged track drivers. After nearly 30 years of use the splines are quite worn on most Snoscoots. I’m also going to be machining original cogged track drivers for this square shaft as well. They will be a replacement for Yamaha part # 85G-W4753-02-00. Again this setup is to accommodate people with an original Snoscoot track or stock replacement track.

It seems there a number of people modifying the Snoscoot with a newer updated track with a different cogged driver and pitch or converting them to a long track. Most of the newer tracks seem to use a hex type axle / driveshaft.

I can machine the Snoscoot axle / driveshaft to accommodate any shaft (square, hex, 7/8”, 1”, whatever).

I can also look into machining new plastic cogged drivers with whatever pitch and mating shaft hole (square, hex). Although it seems Olymon might have that covered.

If there is enough interest I could do a production run of the shafts for sure. What seems to be the consensus for the shaft type 1” hex?

Is there any need for the matching plastic cogged drivers and suitable pitch to be machined??

I'm not 100% positive on the shaft size but I think 1.00" is what they are. They make a 6 tooth driver for a hex shaft already.
If you machined drivers that would a lot of material to remove and would be pretty expensive I would think. I did think of making a 6 tooth 2.86" pitch driver too with the square shaft in case someone wanted to try and use one if those tracks for a long track project. I think it came out less than .380" bigger in diameter than the 2.52" driver.

One possible problem is getting a steel ring for the driver/shaft grip area to keep it tight. On a sno scoot it probably wouldn't have enough to make it slip on the shaft, but you never know, there could be some big side load at some time.

It seems like the 7 tooth 2.52 pitch drivers for a 7/8" square shaft are impossible to find anymore. I believe the Kimpex part # was 04-108-19.
The 7 tooth 2.52 pitch drivers for a 1" hex shaft are easily found.

I can certainly machine the snoscoot axles from 1" hex stock in order to use the available hex drivers. It seems the possibilities are endless for 1" hex drivers.

There is a considerable setup and time involved to machine these of course. Depending on interest I could do a production run.

As for machining the drivers, the cost of the raw materials (plastic) to machine them from almost makes it cost prohibitive.

If anyone is intersted in a snoscoot axle / driveshaft in 1" hex let me know.

Most scoots / sports seem to be getting long tracked ... biggest issue seems to be finding the square 2.52" pitch drivers so that you can use a common (less expensive track). extrovert drivers like the ones on the older tundras could be a decent option as they were only about 1" thick. Or as suggested, a hex axle rather than the stock square one would be best option - aftermarket drivers for the hex axle are pretty common.

Surprised someone hasn't bundled the basics for a long track kit using surplus gear (rails + track + mounting assembly + drivers) for those not so mechanically inclined.

Yeah, it would make it a lot easier for some people if it was a direct and simple bolt on kinda kit for a long track conversion. It seems there are many variations on long tracking a scoot.

I wonder if an extrovert type driver with only the teeth on the circumference and not on the sides would be enough to drive the track on a scoot. I wouldn't think the scoot would have enough power to tear thru the track windows?? Most extrovert type drivers seem to drive on both the side and the circumference.

It seems a hex type shaft for the scoot would solve a lot of problems with the square drivers nearly impossible to find.

Avid drivers

I have a set he built installed and waiting for a couple of parts to fire up the scoot .
They look great and fit great.
This is my 3 rd scoot build and i highly recoment his drivers.
Ne sence in reinventing the wheel when he has them
