Skyland -Maria's Pass

Since I haven't seen any reports on this area, we rode it this Sunday. Don't even bother! There is soooooo many stumps and logs still laying around. They need another three feet of snow to at least get the obvious land mines covered up. So, for you powder hounds, better find another place to play until they get hammered with a few storms.

Definitely like the new warming hut up there though. Somebody was busy and people like me are much appreciative of nice things like that, so thank you to the people who built a new warming hut.

where did you go

Where abouts in the Skyland area did you ride? How far back along the road, down the creek?

The very first left that you can take off of Skyland road is the East Fork loop. That takes you all the way into a little basin that will lead you back into places like Flat Top mountain and Elk Calf mountain and eventually across the snow bridge and then back up to Skyland road. Too many trees, stumps, and rocks still visible. If it's not visible, you'll still bump something! There are many play areas off to the right of Skyland road but it's the same conditions there too. The next major left fork is the Challenge Loop that will bring you out on Skyland road one hundred yards past the Challenge cabin. Still, too many land mines laying around. We road past the new warming hut to the end of Skyland road. We continued on puzzle creek to make our way into El Tigre Basin except that the forest circus have two signs on trees right before you decend down a v-notch drainage that will take you into the open pasture with the winding creek. I missed the signs because they were about fifteen feet up the tree. A little more snow and they will be at eye level. If you don't want a hefty ticket by a snow cop, I would stay out of there. Otherwise take your chances!

Not to mention they hide cameras up there somewhere. Probably on the top of puzzle creek on the divide. I remember a couple guys getting busted up there last year. Damn shame they had to close that area. Awesome fun!

I flat out asked a couple of the snow cops a couple years ago what's legal to ride back there and they said anything on the other side of puzzle slide is illegal.

Is the puzzle slide where the old trail up to crescent Cliff used to be. On like the West side of the divide?.
