Repairing EGT sensor

After getting my sled out of storage this fall I noticed that I must of damaged my EGT sensor last spring. It looks like the wire coming from the probe got pinched between the frame and cylinder. It wore through the external braided wire and the internal wire has a few broken strands inside. It was giving me erratic numbers for my EGTs also. Is there any way I can repair this, solder or something or is it toast?
 
Well, lords888, it depends on what is damaged. If it is "just" the wire, you should indeed be able to solder it together. Assuming - quite an assumption - that you can cut through the shielding to the wire and clip some wire bare to be soldered. If it is the sensor itself, you are of course scre. . . um. . . now required to buy a new sensor. ;)

Though my coolant temp sensor failed the week before the national championships three years back, and my brother - the chemical engineer - built me a new sensor out of a loose thermocouple, a bit of small-diameterr stainless tubing, and some epoxy. . . But the EGT sensor would be harder to fake. :D

edit: What's the difference between a chemist and a chemical engineer? If both are working over a bucket of sulphuric acid, and their watch falls into it, the chemist will frantically look about for a glass or stainless rod, to fish his watch out with. The chemical engineer will frantically look about for the nearest faucet. . . :eek:

Thermocouples work on the principle of dissimilar metal wire types that when hooked together create a milivolt output, this will vari depending on the temp, with this said you will not want to add a variable into it by adding solder. For the millivolt signal to remain accurate the wires them selves must touch, ie; butt splice, wire nut, etc...then heat shrink over it.
