Ratcheting Recoil - 2019 Summit 600R

Just over 600 miles and the recoil would slip / ratchet when attempting to start. I only use the recoil to start it first thing and then use the SHOT start, so this doesn’t have a lot of time / yanks. Disappointing for sure.

Is the cam / pawl item serviceable or do I need to replace the entire recoil assembly?

Looks like the pawl part number 420852636 was updated to 420852639. This part number was used on 2020+ G4 600R’s and 850’s. The new part has two O-rings on the “tit” that locates into the recoil.

Running a can? If so that was your issue. Gotta heat tape for some brands of cans that are not double walled.

I always heat tape the recoil, it will stretch the recoil's life a lot! There was a service bulletin on the recoil on my -19 850, might have been on the 600 too but hasn't been done.

Shot on a 600? Didn't know it existed.

No can, totally stock / stock muffler.

Yes SHOT is an option on the 600. I did the repair last night and it was easy to replace the pawl. Maybe I’ll yank the muffler again and apply some heat tape…..couldn’t hurt. Also noticed the parts diagram for the 19’s had moly-lube on the parts, but the 20+ do not.

Had dealer check the VIN for open campaigns / recalls. Nothing about the recoil, but had something about the SHOT capacitor. I’m leaving that alone for now.

I don't remember which year it was, maybe '19 or '20 but there were topics on here about excess grease in the recoil causing slip. Maybe you replacing the pawl was enough to get the excess grease off and you'll be good now. Heat tape wouldn't hurt, I did it to my '17 from new just because.

So...not a recoil question but I have a 2022 600r for my wife and youngest to ride and I can't find any info on target RPM. Is it 7800 to 7900 like the 8500?

look in your owner's manual under the technical specifications section.

That's right. My 19 worked about 5 times, then stranded me. (No shot or e-start.)

I think in my case the grease cause the pawl to stick in the engaged position. I think it happened on a below zero morning / single digit day. Needless to say the plastic pawl lost the battle and it was ground down as you saw in the picture.

I haven't really been into the G4 recoil, but I doubt that it is much different than the previous in application.
IM/HO much grease at all is a liability.
Plastic doesn't need lubed much, and no more than a recoil git's used, you could wipe it clean and likely never wear it out.
But much heavy grease will stick on cold mornings.
However, I would expect it to just not engage, or to engage late.
I don't see how that would cause it to bugger the pawl?

One real easy way to bugger a pawl is to hit RER before the recoil is seated, and especially if you pull the rope while in RER to seat a lazy rope!
THAT should git it ripped right outta your hand!

The fact that the G4 unit has the torx headed screw, I'm gunna say that this recoil unit is much more serviceable than the SerIII unit.

After my repair last year, everything worked as it should this season ……until yesterday.

After one pull start in the morning, riding all day in Island Park and then putting the sled in my trailer that night where it got down to -15, the recoil just “free wheels” (pawl won’t engage). I let it thaw out for many hours yesterday in my shop and even ran a heater blowing down towards the recoil. Nothing! I guess I will open it up again and have a look?

I do see that there is an updated recoil assembly. Maybe I need to replace the whole shooting match. The part number I came up with was 420893763.

Tore into it. The bolt backed out although it was torqued to spec 8.84 ft-lbs it didn’t stay put. I guess I should’ve used loctite!

Does anyone know if the recoil cover comes with the “threaded insert”. The threads are no longer threads ;). All the pictures I see don’t have that center post.
