Question: Idaho snowmobile registration documentation?

I was wondering what Idaho snowmobile registration documentation was issued at the time of registration?
I just purchased a sled from a fellow in Idaho and can't get it across the US/Canada border without the title issued with registration.
He doesn't remember getting any reciept/title when he registered it. I have manufacturer certificate of origin and bill of sale, not enough I'm told.
My new to me sled and trailer are sitting just across the US border waiting to be cleared as of 9 pm tonight, a real bummer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

I know that when I buy a sled in Idaho that is new or used I do two things.

1. pay taxes on the sled when I file for the title. If I have a loan on the sled then the title goes to the bank as collateral, they actually own the sled. If it is paid for free and clear the title comes to me.

2. register the sled and get the snowmobile sticker so I'm legal to ride it Idaho.

When I sell the sled to someone else, I sign off the title and give them a bill of sale. Then the new owner can take that to where ever they go to get the sled in their name.

When I register the sled (different then a title) I get paper work showing this and I'm suppose to keep it with the sled and put the sticker on the side. I'm only guessing, but the guy you bought it from probably never titled it in Idaho so he wouldn't have to pay taxes on it, so in turn you don't have the title and neither does he. Or he had a loan on it and the bank has the title waiting for the money to pay off the loan. Some shops let you register the sled without the registration card just by looking at the sleds vin#, they are not suppose to but they do.

You also get a form for application for certificate of title this form http://www.itd.idaho.gov/dmv/vehicleservices/documents/3337.pdf as well as an Idaho title but that may go to a lean holder if any. after that then when you renew your registration you will only get a copy showing valid tags and ownership for the year

I had almost the same thing happen to me with a sled I bought on E-bay. After the auction closed I found out the guy had never titled the sled in his home state of Iowa, so could not produce a title for the sled. All he had was the old Minnesota registration that he sent to me.On the MN reistration was the name of an insurance company and the woman that signed it. So I call the insurance company and find out that the woman who signed it, signs for all the totaled sleds the company deals with. Long story short I told the guy he could keep his sled and that I didn't have any interest in a rebuilt totaled sled with no title for it. He had bought it at Haydays he claims and could not even produce the orginal bill of sale. I figure I dodged a bullet that day and learned my lesson not to buy anything of that dollar value ($7K) with out seeing it in person first.

I can't remember the exact year but titles were not issued for sleds until a few years ago. My 1997 Polaris did not need a title when my dad originally bought it. When I got it from him in 2003 I had the option of getting a title then.
Check with DMV in Idaho (www.state.id.us), you can get title expedited for $15.

Not saying your wrong but I had a 95 Arctic Cat Cougar that I bought from a rental company and it came with a certificate of origin from Montana, when I registered it I filled for a title here in Idaho at the DMV. I sold th sled so I don't have mine but my father in law bought one at the same time and we were just going through stuff here and I have it. It says Idaho Title on the top, this was back in March of 96.

You are correct as I stated it incorrectly. You did not need to get a title for sleds back the but they were available. My fault for stating it wrong.

Thanks to all who replied. I got the sled home this afternoon all legit. It appears the border officers had jumped the gun on the title issue, it isn't required if you have the other paperwork (manufacturer's cert of origin and bill of sale). Thanks again, hope to make it down next season for some riding, till then

I own a total of 9 sleds, most were purchased for under 2000 bucks. The only one that ever came with a title was my 1998 AC Powder Special. I purchased a 2003 Ski doo 800 for like 4000. But it did not have a title, I was not even aware they had titles for sleds until I bought that Powder special for my wife. I have been registering it for 3 years and all is well, not cops beating down the door. Glad it worked out for you.
