octane boost vs race fuel

Octanes

Just a question I have asked before but never had answered.
Is there a way to check levels of octane in fuel. When you pull up to the pump I'm sure that you are not gauranteed that one hose is 87 and another is 92. How stale is the fuel at that pump. Mixing 50/50 puts you at what octane depending on what you initially filled with.
Is there a way to test the fuel, some kind of meter or litmus paper that can do this.
Any info would be appreciated.

No
sorry

Good question, I would like to know how to test the octane level. Someone has to have a way to test this.

Octane ratings are done in a lab with a test engine, so there isnt a way to test at the pump. If you look around some gas stations offer a higher octane premium, i would say that is your best bet. Sorry.:)

actually there is a way to test octane, I saw a news story about it about a year ago.....I couldn't tell you how the equipment works but there is a government sponsored program here in canada that had a guy who would drive around to questionable gas bars if people complained about not getting the octane rating or volume of fuel they were paying for. He would fill up there in a normal looking van, but the fuel wasn't going into the tank, it would go into the equipment he had in the van and it would measure the volume and the octane rating right there. If the gas bar wasn't compliant they got fined and/or shut down in extreme cases. not sure if this would ever help the average guy trying to keep his sled motor from blowing, but the technology is there nonetheless, but probably much too expensive for anybody to bother with

Never heard of that before??? Maybe they had a small nock motor set up in the back of the van???

it could have been some kind of a knock sensing motor that advanced and retarded timing til it found the octane rating, it gave a digital readout of octane rating i wish i could find that clip, I'm pretty sure it was on yahoonews, come to think of it it was probably more like 6 months ago but like i said the technology is there but it would be priced way out of even the richest sledder's budget. Good program though, how the heck do you ever know how long a gas station's premium fuel has been sitting in their tank for, or if it ever even had the octane rating they are advertising
