Changing Chaincase Oil on 2008 XP

I just bought a 2008 Summit. Going to change the chaincase oil just to be certain in case the previous owner hasn't recently. Any tips or advice? Is the drain plug located on the rear side of the chaincase by where your feet go? How much oil does it take? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

No drain plug, pull the chaincase cover....good time to check the chain and tension.
8-10oz of oil and you're good.

Be very careful that you do not strip the case side threads and I would also replace them with full threaded bolts. Factory ones look like a triangle, probally some type of self tapper.

Winterbrew,

Any guidance on adjusting the chain. What should be right, what is wrong. Sounds like a pan is needed to change the chain case oil, how do you control where used oil is going?

Thanks in advance. Safe riding.

I just loosened all the bolts about half way and popped the bottom out and was able to catch all the used chain case oil with a funnel into an empty pop bottle under the sled.

Sounds like a lot of things can go wrong when changing it. I am going on a trip this week out west. Is it best to wait til I get back just in case I would strip something out and don't have time to fix it before the trip? Is there a check plug?

it's really quite a basic procedure...loosen the chaincase bolts, (8mm, i think), drain oil, re-align chaincase cover, re-tighten bolts, (you don't have to reef on them, just a little past snug....use a short wrench, then you won't have too much leverage), the re-fill chaincase with a synthetic oil...quite simple...there is a check plug, it's the little square-headed plug, about 1/5 the way up the chaincase, right by your right foot....you will want a 16 point 8mm socket to easily remove and replace the plug...if you know which end of a wrench, or ratchet to use, you should be ok....

8.5oz. per the manual. Be sure when you adjust the tension to finger tight that it doesn't tighten more when you tighten the lock nut. Also don't forget the speedo sensor.

You don't need to mess with the chain tension to change oil. Just take the cover off and inspect chain and if it seems loose then do an adjustment.
I just put the whole 12 oz bottle in mine and it still wasn't coming out of the square headed side plug. I hope it will not cause problems ?

The chain case bolts are some kind of strange self theading that are sort of three sided, strange in that they don't seem to stop cutting threads. They always seem to feel gritty or grind a bit when you put them back in, this why I think so many have stripped. I replaced all of mine with conventional bolts after
cleaning out the threads. Regular bolts go in and out silky smooth. Got em at the local Ace hardware, flanges bolts even. When you tighten them down, good
idea to go around the case and do each bolt a bit at a time as the O-Ring gasket is quite thick.

On tightening the chain I tried the finger tight on the adjuster and I would never trust the lazy way for chain tension. Do it the old fashioned way with the cover off and adjust it by checking chain play on the back side of the chain (opposite of the adjuster) I go for about 1/2" of play back and forth.

Good Luck

Oh ya lube, doo chain lube or I have been using Mobil one synthetic 75/90 gear lube for a number of years with success, seem to find a bit less metal
grindings.

How many miles on the sled? Chains don't last forever. Consider replacing the chain if there is over 2500mi on the sled. Cheap insurance if your not familiar with the sled and previous maintenance habits.

Amsoil chaincase lube, $7/bottle Skidoo $17/bottle

I cleaned all the bolts by running them through an 8mm nut and tapped all the holes on the chaincase to clean them out. Probably good Idea to replace them.
