Chain tension adjuster clip

So without checking my manual I figured the pin needs to be pulled out first to tighten chain tension....wrong. So I guess the pin just goes back in where there's a slot and just goes over the shaft thing without going into any hole?? Should have looked closer before I jerked it out. So then what's the hole for that's in the end of the adjustment shaft ??

The pin can go through the hole but its a real pain to try and get it in there(only 2 pts per rotation of adjustment), the easier and still effective method is to leave it on and rotate until you feel you are tight enough and than back off, if you want to, until the pin bottoms on one of the four sides. If you don't want to shoulder the pin it will probably do so on its own.:)
