A Little Early Info

Hello:

I rode about 150 miles in the Trailshead area this week. Snow conditions are basically pretty decent for this time of year. The 4 feet we got the first part of Nov. has pretty much shrunk away but started a very good base. That snow is very sugary and much of it is icy. Nevertheless it seems to have stuck around pretty well and provided some layer to build on. We have gotten somewhere around 2 feet since then and there is some powdery stuff on top. There are some areas where the depths are 3-4 feet but 1-2 feet is about the norm on the flat. Snow is pretty good and ridable from a few miles north of Trailshead to Limestone. It decreases noticably north and south of there. The early blizzard was not really a good thing. The loggers had a lot of stock still in the forest that was cut and needed to be hauled. They plowed many side roads and some trail right of ways to get to the logs and really made a mess. There are many berms that are now frozen dirt and ice. You berm riders are not going to like it and I think you will quickly break up your sleds if you're not careful. This is a situation we will be stuck with all winter it appears. Huge mounts of logging this summer in the Trailshead area and that means hundreds of new off trail stumps and debris.
On the bright side we do have a good jump on the snow levels and it looks like possibly a very substantial snow year. Although progressing a little slow, the trails are coming together and should be ready to go on the 15th. Grooming will begin in earnest on that day and all trails should have had some grooming by the 18th. Not all signs are up and many roads are still open to hunters and other traffic. Some gates still closed and land owners who really want snowmobilers to stay away till the 15th. A fair number of new reroutes on the trails this year but it did open up some very nice areas to ride in.

thanks for the information. We are going to attempt a trip out right after Christmas. Hopefully before the wrapping paper hits the floor. I will be checkin in for more posts on the conditions. the new web cam at Trailshead just makes things worse, can't stop checking in on it.

Thanks for the update Firetrail, we're heading out there over Christmas. Hopefully there will be a base packed down on the trail so that we are not riding on dirt and rocks. Would be nice to have a little powder to play in too but that's stretching it considering it's only December and it is the Black Hills.
