A little advice if you ever have defend sledding with a skier

Yea, I love it when they get all butt hurt when they decide to use the 7 miles of sled trails here (of the over 500 miles of trail system available to them) and sleds are using it too.

I hate pretentious jackasses.

Just kidding, I'm picking up what you're laying down. Not all Californians are pretentious jackholes. But there sure are a lot who are. And a lot of them have relocated to Southeast Alaska with the purpose of pissing everyone off.

This is exactly what will cause MORE problems.

We used to have a peaceful mountain until the skier hag wrote an article for SKI magazine promoting this back country area. Now instead of skiers you could count on one hand we have two dozen subarus parked on the highway. They purposely hog parking spaces. They worked hard at lying to try and close it to sledders.

Your idea RUINED one of the best sled spots in SoCo. Keep them on the corduroy, riding the lifts, best place for them.

I understand what SXViper is saying, but have to agree with you CO Powder. Once they decide that the area is theirs, they will try to exclude sleds or anything else that they don't like.

Hell, we had a group here about 15 years ago who were trying to control the airspace. They wanted to ban helicopters because the noise they make impacted their wilderness experience and commune with nature. They weren't successful, but did get the heli operators to change their flight operations in order to accommodate them.

A funny thing happened at a public forum about this issue though. Someone asked them if they intended to ban the 727's that take off and land at the airport several times a day because they make far more noise than helicopters. The response was that the 727 jetliners were okay because they use them to get into and out of town, but helicopters weren't because they didn't use helicopters.

Another point they made is that helicopters are okay if they are being used for search and rescue. That's because many of these numbnuts tend to get themselves into trouble regularly and need rescuing.

So, never underestimate the lengths that these types will go to in order to control the actions of others. These are the same people who want to ban sledding. And anything else that they deem unnecessary or harmful for that matter. Their criteria and justification for banning something can be beyond ridiculous.

And Another Thing...

 The helicopter issue reminded me of another hypocrisy that I have repeatedly witnessed around here.

Sleds are banned from many areas here. That is unless they are being used to the benefit of the ski community. It’s okay to use them for the ski patrol in the downhill ski area. And it’s okay to use sleds to groom nordic ski trails. And contractors can use sleds and four wheelers in these areas in order to do repair and improvement work.

Otherwise it is not okay to use a sled or wheeler in these areas.

Seems a bit hypocritical to me. Kind of like the anti-helicopter people who thought floatplanes and jetliners were okay because they use them and helicopters are only okay if they are being used to rescue them from their latest attempt at winning a Darwin Award.

It’s funny. They don’t even seem to be aware of the irony.

Always defending Snowmobiles

Sled hating is nothing but jealousy.

Sleds leave no trace. When the snow melts you would never know there were snowmobiles in the area.

The pollution argument just doesn't hold any water. The greenies in my area have tried for years to prove sleds leave petroleum pollution behind. They have tested, retested and tested the water again at Molas lake, which is right next to the Silverton snowmobile tour base camp. Thousands of sleds ride the area and the lake collects much of the immediate area drainage. They have never found a trace of oil or gas in the water, and they have tried. Pollution from modern snowmobiles is impossible to trace in the environment. If ANY amount of pollution is going to be considered too much then the skiers need to sell their cars and trucks too...

Noise is a popular argument. I personally am a big fan of stock exhaust cans. My hearing is bad and a loud can is too much for me. I have run stock exhausts for 10 years now. There are two arguments here. One is the effects on wildlife. That one is totally bunk. Anyone who hunts any type of game knows that the sound of the human voice is FAR more disruptive to wildlife than driving a truck right through the middle of the woods. The skier and hiker types that think they frighten wildlife less than machines are completely out of touch with reality. Humans scare animals much more than machines. The second is the greenies claim to a right of silent recreation. Total BS and available in 120 million acres already set aside just for you, wrongly, but there nonetheless. Sleds, even loud ones, have to be pretty close before you can hear them. We as sledders looking for friends in the woods know this. I heard this complaint at meetings regarding land that borders a busy state highway, used by big rigs all the time. It is a disingenuous argument in most cases.

Other topics I might have missed? Other stupid excuses for not liking sleds?

I skied(alpine) for 32 years. Then picked up a sled 3 years ago.

Have not even touched my ski's since. LOL.

Most of the cross country skiers seem ok I have only run across a couple of the entitled jerk ones...But i know they are out there in huge numbers wanting to shut everything they don't like down. Just never met one in person that was like that.
