93 XLT longtrack project

Okay guys, have a friend that has a 1993 XLT SP... I know, its old. but the kid loves the sled. Last year we transplanted a front suspension 97 xc 440 so it has a lot more travel in the front, plus changed the tank to the racing style tank. Anyways, he wants to extend it to a 144" 2" paddle. We have already found a xtra 10 136 skid and figured we could put rail extensions to 144 on it. and would have to change drivers to 8 tooth... Looking for suggestions for gearing, clutching changes and any advice to help the project go smooth. Im assuming drop brackets for the rear mounts??? Notched track right??? Any help would be appreciated. This is one of the best sites for guys that know a hell of a lot about mods and I could use some of that knowledge. Thanks guys...

I've got a '94 that I put a 136 x 1.75 under with the help of 8 tooth drivers. If you go this route, make double sure that the new drivers have the metal collars on the shoulders. My first set didn't and I spun the driveshaft inside the drivers quite a ways from the truck.

I'm not sure what he is trying to accomplish with the 144, but I'm not sure I would go much beyond a 136. There isn't much torque to this motor and it likes to rev, so I would be afraid of extending it too far and asking too much of it.

I geared mine down, but forget the ratio at the moment.

So is that the biggest track u can put with the 8 tooth drivers or can we put a 2'' track?? Im not sure why he wants to go 144... i guess it doesnt help that he rides with all of us that have 151s, 155s, and 153s... I think a 136 2" would be great on there... The biggest thing would be the gearing, thats for sure.

No need for a notched track just drill out the tunnel protectors. Get an Xtra-lite or Edge RMK skid instead of the Xtra-10.

Because of the cooler in the front of the tunnel, I think you'd need to use 7 tooth drivers to fit a 2" track (unless you D&R the chaincase).

I definitely agree with the advice to go with an xtra lite or edge skid. At one time I was considering putting extensions on a 136 xtra 10, but I bought a 144 xtra lite RMK skid for less than the cost of extensions from tracks usa.

I'm converting 2 XLTs to 144 skids this summer (1 xtra lite and 1 edge suspension). I'm using 8 tooth drivers and 1.75" tracks. As far as gearing goes, dropping from 9 tooth to 8 tooth drivers lowers the ratio a little more than dropping from 20 to 18 on the top sprocket. I'm going to start with 20 top and 39 bottom and see how that goes. With 8 tooth drivers, 20:39 is about the same as 18:40. The 97 SKS RMK had 18 top and 40 bottom, so I figured that would be a good place to start.

Yeah, I am already making a deal for a edge rmk 144 skid... i think it would be a better all around skid for suspension wise and all that. So if i went to 7 tooth drivers it should really gear it down then... Im wondering if i should just change the top sprocket down a size or two and start from there. He really does not want to do a D&R this year, but possibly next year. Now to find a track for it. Im not sure weather we should go finger track or not... We ride in North Dakota so we ride a fair amount of not too deep snow and ditches.... damn flat landers! We do however make it to the UP and hardly ride trails there. Thanks for all the help! Now to get all the parts here and start rippin' in apart!

Dropping from 9 to 7 tooth drivers would be about like dropping 5 teeth on the top sprocket (the drop from 8 to 7 is even more of a drop than the drop from 9 to 8 because 1/8 is more than 1/9).

So just the driver swap from 9t to 7t will be like dropping from a 20t top gear to a 15t top gear (or 21 to 16 depending what it has now). I don't think you would need to gear it any lower than that. If anything, you might what to gear it up a tooth or two after swapping drivers.

Because of the cooler in the front of the tunnel, I think you'd need to use 7 tooth drivers to fit a 2" track (unless you D&R the chaincase).

No you wont have to D&R it is tight but it fitts fine I have a 94 with a 136 x 10 skid extenions and a 144x2 paddle and i run 8 toothdrivers with stock gearing i love it the best ditch sled ive ever rode and it sees about 1000-1500 miles a year not a power house but i thank it goes better than it ever did with the 121 studed track.

Well in that case we will just use 8 tooth drivers and run a 2" track and see if we want to gear it down at all or just leave it. Do u know what your top speed is and RPMS??? Not that we are concerned about top speed just curious. My RMK tops out at like 77 so speed is no big deal. Thanks again for all your guys help, its really gonna make this build go a lot smoother. When we get rolling on the project I will post some pics of the progress...

my top speed is around 85 actual i dont have the adjusted speedo drive so it sayes like 98 or so but with 8 tooth drivers it is less. it turns up to 8800 to 9000 rpm on the tack but that to could be off to.fast enough for trails and ditches so i never tryed any thing diffrent.let me no when you need that info and i got some pics for you to help explain what i did.

Sweet...post some pics, I have always loved the ole XLT sleds. Had one years ago modded up and it was light and nimble with good power.

i have a dumb idea how about going to a 7 tooth extro with a 3 pitch and a 153 you cannot use a 8 tooth because they are the same diameter as a 9 normal but you could move the skid back for a 153 and drop to 2 drivers

I dont no about that 7x3 is 21" and 8x2.52 is 20.16 so x3.14 to get the diametor and im pushing it with 8 tooth and 2" so i would say drop & roll or 97 or newer chain case with 7 1/8" center to center on jackshaft to driver . But a 153 would look kool .

I Agree, 153 would be sweet on there, but i think 144 is enough for the stuff that he does... Well, now its just getting all the parts and all that... Manowar, if u can post some pics of the rear suspension and drivers and all that it will give me a better idea of how its suppose to look like. thanks

If you can sell your sled for $800 to $1,000, sell it. Use the long track money and buy a Gen II, or and early model edge.

Well its a little too late to do that now, skid and track are on its way, parts have been found and/or ordered... Its kinda a done deal...

I suggested to him to sell his sled and buy a newer updated one but he likes that sled and the chassis so we are going to work with what he has...

Thanks for all the comments guys, really appreciate it. I will post up some pics when we get tearing into it, should be starting in about the middle of August.
