2871 Compressor wheel damage

I noticed that the fins/blades of my turbo have some chips, and some are even bent a little on the tips/edges. I also notice my sled has not been running consistently on top (good on bottom and mid range). It looks like something went through it, yet, it still produces boost and runs(just not as good as I think it should). Soooooo......is this my problem? Do I need a new one?

well, your reeds are probably pretty trashed if some compressor tips have gone throught it.. you need a new impelar(sp?) wheel.. those are pretty cheap, check shaft play to see if its hitting the edges.. if not and something just got sucked througth then you probably just ned a new wheel and reeds. if the shaft play is bad enough that the wheel is rubbing on the housing then you need your turbo rebuilt.

I ran mine for half a year with the blades chiped up bad on my 3071 before I rebuilt it. Ran fine. With Garretts you have to send it in to a authorized Garrett dealer and do a chra exchange which is about 425, or get a new center section which is 800. You can't just replace the compressor wheel.

That is what I have been told. I honestly don't know how much damage is really a problem.

The impeller is balanced and spins in the 150,000+ rpm range (could be out on that) so if you think you have enough damage to knock it out of balance, you might want to get it fixed before it fails. You can get a new cartridge and have peace of mind

check for skidoo's that got sucked through the intake!

I was gunna say that with the rpms these things turn being a bit outta balance could cause some bigger issues down the road!

Look at sending it to Forced Performance and get the 2868 HTA wheel put in it. Supposed to spool much sooner and have greater efficiency up top over the 2871 wheel.

LOL.....these responses are getting comical :)

I have heard about the 2868......I will call them and see what the deal is.
