1977 Artic Cat Pantera 5000 FC

Hi I picked up a 77 pantera. Having problems with the drive belt. I thought it was a secondary clutch issue. If I put the sled on a stand it's fine. When I put it on the ground and hit the throttle the sheaves open up and sucks the belt to the bottom of the secondary and the primary smokes the belt and it just binds. I got another secondary and it does the same thing. Any help would be great.! Thanks so much. - Dave

While on the jack stand, with the belt off, does the track and drive system turn over smoothly?
Clutches clean and springs inspected?

Check the drive shaft bearings on the speedometer cable side.

I just had my 77 Pantera FA out and raced it for the first time this weekend. The brand new factory Cat belt seemed a little loose and first time I tried to take off from the trailer it just wanted to smoke it. Threw the back up on a track stand and revved it up good through 3-4 cycles of the clutches. Some old crud flung out of the secondary and worked perfect rest of the day. It was pretty warm out and the steel skis were sticking down pretty hard so had to be cognizant of that too.

Running a Comet 102 primary on mine.
