"H" stands for high sensitivity receiver, so it will track the satellites in more obstructed areas or in your jacket, etc.
"C" is for color screen, maybe?
"x" stands for expandable memory. The HCX has a slot for a Micro SD card under the battery.

It was explained to me that the hcx has something that gives it a better capacity to find sattelites in obscure situations. My hunting partner has the hc and I have the hcx and in the dark timber holes mine comes on quicker. On one rainy day he couldm't find sattelites and I did......so ????????????

530 vs 530 hcx

The hcx also has the location feature to find anyone else in your group should they get hung up and also have this unit. Tried it in BC a mile apart, up over a thousand foot ridge and down the other side. Marked our positions spot on.

Have to say there are 4 in our group that now have the 530hcx... they are worth every penny. Add the topo's and they are even better though not real detailed, they do give you an idea of terrain!:face-icon-small-coo

I like my 530HCX and I recieved a good deal on it last year. Amazon.com was selling them for $380, which is $120 less then most places, so check to see if there still selling them for that price.

I bought two of the 530's. They both have color screens, they both have the locator option where I can see and find others in my group. I can send my location to others. I haven't lost satellite very often so I can't compare it to the reception of the hcx. It does not have the option for the memory card but I have never needed it. I can load the entire Susitna, Mat-su, Bowl and Kenai map without a problem. There's my two cents. I think the only major differences in hardware is the reception is better on the hcx and you can use a memory card if your loading huge maps.

I thought the 530 lacked the Barometer, Altimeter and NOAA weather radio. Looks like the 520hcx replaces the 530 as the 530 is no longer listed on Garmin's website

Nope, that was the 520. The 530 and 530 HCX are the same thing other than:

memory slot
more sensitive antennae.

One other thing not to many people know about is that with the original 530 when dropping bread crumbs/tracking it will actually start to delete some points to optimize memory. The new HCX does not do this at all. Having said that if you can get a great deal on a straight 530 you would never know the difference and it would be worth it. I have run the 530 for 2-3 years now and it haas been flawless. Everyone in our group carries one. It sure comes in handy when everyone is scattered. No more searching for everyone wasting valuable sledding time.

Thanks for the correct information.

Looks like amazon still has a good price on the 530hcx . You just have to look at items frequently purchased with the unit and the price shown is lower. Did that a couple of times

This is a good site for comparing the models. Looks like they honor lower prices too . . .

I have a the 520 (hubby has 530hcx) and really like it. The additional mapping software was kinda spendy too. We got the MicroSD cards at Costco for way cheap.

Garmin had a $50 rebate going last summer when I bought mine. I bought it through an US online store so I could get the high power radio that isn't offered in Canada. Had no problem getting the rebate, even though I am in Canada.
