Social Media Q&A about the 2020 Mountain Sleds

February 2020 Feature

2020 POLARIS

@booth_410

I’d buy one if Caleb took part in the design for 2021 models. Mtn sleds need more strength.

It will be great to have Caleb Kesterke involved with Polaris. When you bring in a talented rider like that, you immediately start to see what a rider like that needs and how it can influence the product. On the other hand, not many people are pushing sleds to the limits Caleb is. We can see Caleb building a relationship with Polaris engineering this season and, if things go swimmingly, start to impact design and concepts going forward. Polaris already has the next three years planned out, developed and ready to go, so to speak. Tweaks can be made, but every OEM is three years ahead of production.

Why still no Quick Drive with the 3” track?

We’ve asked this before to the folks who make these decisions at Polaris. It comes down to gearing and the belly pan. The 3” track runs a smaller driver, so the gearing on a 2.6” track Quick Drive Pro RMK couldn’t be simply bolted onto a Pro RMK running a 3” track and smaller driver. The final drive ratio would be way off. So a Quick Drive on a 3” Pro RMK would need either a smaller top gear or a larger bottom gear. You can’t go smaller on the top, or you get into the zone of compromising the belt chain long-term durability. So the bottom gear needs to be larger. A lot larger. The gear would hit the belly pan. Rather than put a bulge in the bottom of the belly pan and expose that drivetrain to damage, Polaris decided to stick to a chain case. Problem solved.

What are the actual changes in the chassis of the Khaos?

The Pro RMK chassis and RMK Khaos are identical. The changes are the shocks and the rear suspension rail profile.

@bgjohnson888

When will they get something close to the shot start? What’s the estimated experienced rider mountain riding range on a tank of gas?

The Shot starting system you’re referring to is owned by Ski-Doo, with patents and lawyers and all that stuff. The only way Polaris or Arctic Cat or Yamaha or your mom can have a starting system similar to Shot is to develop someting without infringing on a single patent, or license it from Ski-Doo similar to how the whole electronic reverse thing went.

@skibumm57

When are they going to acquire BD so we can have factory turbos?

Ahh, the record-holding rumor. It’s been going on what, 12 years now? We can’t say if it will or will not ever happen, but we know a factory turbo would weight about twice as much as a BD system and run half the boost. And cost about as much. Some things are better left in the aftermarket world.

@codykenon

Why didn’t they cut the tunnels?

We know they have been testing it. But we don’t know why they aren’t pulling the trigger on shorter tunnels yet. Our best guess is Polaris is holding its best new technologies for its next RMK platform.

@cmmgalant

Does the Khaos have a bulkhead cooler or is that only on the SKS?

Only the SKS. The Khaos is classified as an RMK model, which denotes in a way just a tunnel cooler. The SKS line, while based on a Pro RMK, has a front cooler as well.

@slay3r_fan69

Is there going to be a new chassis in the near future and a single rail, too?

Is there a better Instagram handle than @slay3r_fan69? LOL. Yes, there will be a new chassis in the near future. Model year 2020 will mark five years into the Axys RMK chassis, which was introduced in the 2016 model year. The previous Pro-Ride chassis was in production from 2011 through 2015. You do the math.

@ecyr123

When are they gonna put a new track on it?

We’d guess we’ll see a new track when we see a new generation of the Pro RMK.

@jsteve75

Why chose Pro RMK over Khaos?

The Khaos is designed to do two three things differently than the Pro RMK.

1. Initiate a lean easier. As in tip over easier.

2. More front end lift. As in wheelies. Polaris focused on more aggressive weight transfer with a longer front arm and different rail profile in the rear suspension. A sled that transfers weight quickly to the track and lifts the skis off the ground is easier to tip back and forth and feels more playful.

3. Take bigger hits. As in Walker Evans Hi-Lo compression adjustable Velocity shocks. These shocks are very high-tech and not available on the Pro RMK.

Basically, if you wish your Pro RMK was a little more playful, get a Khaos. If you feel unstoppable on your Pro RMK, keep it.
