Just a friendly heads up to any 2014 with aluminum gears, my buddy's dad had his chain case oil turn gray and the cause was from one of his gears in his chain case had started to round off, 200-300 miles on the sled so keep an eye out.

There light and keep getting lighter. 300 miles and my oil is aluminized. bewahaha great idea TRF. The gear literally feels like Styrofoam when you pick it up.

The aluminum gears are junk and are failing. Ill have a post Monday or Tuesday on them.

so I take this to mean it is better to stick with the steel gears??
I have an aluminum one to be delivered on wednesday. sounds like i may have made a bad purchase?:mmph:

I went back to the steel gears. At 75 miles you can see some serious wear on the teeth already. Not to mention the chain case oil looked like aluminum clam chowder. The gear on the left is a steel gear from last year with 700 miles.

thanks for posting. just out of curiosity, what does the aluminum gear weigh compared to the steel? how much less?

My aluminum gear is probably shot. I got 1 ride on new chain oil and its already dirty as hell. Im going back to a steel gear. Around 300 miles on mine.

4-5 times heavier??? Guessing thats a GUESS! I'll weigh both the stock alum 50 tooth and team steel 50 tooth when I get it. My lower gear is junk after 300 miles and 3 total new chain oil services.

Which is it?

Is the "50t update gear" for the 12 + 13s in the 1702-335 kit aluminum or steel?
Anyone know for sure?

thanks!

Call Kevin at c3 and he'll fix this problem right up for ya! Belt drive is expensive, but awesome, makes the front end of the sled feel way lighter, and throttle response is amazing. Not to mention it looks sweet every time I open up the side panel to get my lunch off my cooker

The 19/50 kit I got for my 12 as two steel gears and a bottle of oil. I sure am glad they used the steel gears on the upgrage kits. IHMO, alumium gear in this application is nuts.

it is steel. i have one sitting on my workbench. the top gear is the same for all sleds; steel.
the bottom gear is aluminum on the sno-pro and limiteds. the standard m8000 uses the steel gear.

i ordered the aluminum gear with the thought, less rotating mass would be a better performer. looks like the downfalls of the aluminum out weigh the benefit:mmph: what a waste of $100. hopefully i can return it when it gets here.

I spoke with a guy from cat today who ran these aluminum gears all last year (3000 miles). He said this is "normal break-in" for these gears. The cloudy stuff you are seeing in the oil is a hardening agent. He recommended changing the oil at 150 miles. However if you're running a turbo or supercharger you should change back to the steel gears. Thats why the 1100's (turbo) have the steel gears in them from the factory. SO I wouldn't sit around sweating about it too much and just ride! Change your oil a few times during the initial break-in, grab your chain case oil or ATF and hit the mountains!

This is normal. Guess the prolite guys better get a steel 50 cause this is after 300 miles on flatland.
Should I assume my chain is full of the aluminum and hardening sauce.

I still put the steel gears in my Sno pro because I switched to 21/49 due to 7 tooth drivers w/3" track but I'm keeping my stock HCR with the original aluminum gear and we'll see how it does at the end of the year. I have 450 on it now and it looks ok. No big change from 75.
