I bought an aftermarket Y pipe and noticed when removing the stock Y from my m8 that there wasn't a gasket, just some red colored high temp silicone for the gasket, Is this the preferred method for installing the new Y pipe. I have heard that Y pipes have a tendency to leak oil and cause issues with belt slippage. Thought maybe there might be a metal gasket availble like the kind available on most vehicles. Thanks for any help you can give.

Gaskets

There is metal gaskets that you can buy but some guys like to use high temp silicone. Sometimes it seals and lasts longer than the gasket. Grab a tube of high temp silicone and give it a good coat and throw it back together.

jsut use some high temp silcone the same as factory , did the same last year with no leakage for the whole season

Thanks guys for the help, I bought some hi temp silicon today and will give it a try, if it last the full season I will be happy.

I just put my y-pipe on yesterday, I talked to the mechanic at the dealership and he would not sell me new gaskets he told me to reuse my old one and put in a bead of hitemp-permetex i put some on both sides of the gasket and bolted her up, I didn't notice and leaking, other than the oil left behind from my stock y-pipe leaked and makes a mess under the hood, I can see how it might make your belt slip.

I have a question, should oil leak out of the pipe where the Y pipe and pipe join. I have an M1000 and it has leaked out out of there since it was new, it doesn't do it if I stay on the pipe but if it idles at all it will leak.

I understand that you should apply the hi temp silicone to all the connections from the engine to can at least once a year. If you find a connection starting to leak, seal again. It easy enough to do, takes less than an hour to do and no worries about oil residue on the belt and clutches.

I reseal all my donut seals whenever they start to leak. Takes little time, unlike trying to clean up all the oil that can accumulate...
