How is the snow generally in January for West Yellowstone/Island Park area? Do they usually have real good snow by then?

Typically the base is starting to set up by first of January.
Seems like the past few winters January has been mediocre snow along with warmer weather.

SW MT elk rifle opener was more than alittle weird, by Monday dawn we had -20F on the truck thermometer, and 3-4 foot drifts after Saturday's wind. Wheelers were really challenged, lots of elk escaped death for a few days. Elk that were shot turned into large fuzzy boulders. Today, Tuesday high of 40, with 50 by Friday. Gonna get messy.

They need snow! Very poor base layer, and it’s dangerous. We were their last Thursday-Friday, and I set off a slide by ridding next to a slope. You can constantly feel the hollow thump of the snow caving in under you. Be careful!

We rode there Jan 15 - 18 and had a great time. Yes there needs more snow but the power lines were fun. You could find some great meadows by the airport that hadn't been tracked up yet. Two Top is tracked up pretty bad but still had a great time.
