I've got a 98 600 zr that I'm turning into a water skipping sled, it does pretty good stock but I've got some things I'd like to try. I'd like to do away with the cowl fresh air supply

and try extensions with pod filters thru the top. Will I be able to still draw enough air? I think I can plumb right out of the box and thru the hood to get fresh air, has anyone tried this? Any other suggestions?

You could do some plumbing with plastic pipe and come up through the hood with the aid of a foam sealed union above the carbs. then put a couple of elbows on the top to get it to point down and cover the ends with frog skin. Other option is to duct the intake through the speedometer hole with frogskin covering that. Biggest problem is that when you sink it the water will fill the engine real fast.

Re duct it using intercooler hoses(look on ebay) and pvc pipe, if you know what your doing you could always install a check valve like you would find in a shop vac (the ones that when its full of water the ball floats and blocks the intake.

Can I get away without using an airbox and plum it up thru the hood or will it cause the efi to many problems? Carbed I think I could tune it but I think I'll need some kind of fuel controller with the efi.

Extra air flow is not a problem on those sleds. The factory air box handled all the air the 600 could suck in and the efi was a little rich. Other than the bad pistons they came with, the engine is pretty tough. Kind of a small engine for water running.

what about the exaust how would you block that

I blocked off the cowl intake and drilled a 4" hole in the top of the airbox to mount the timbersled intake off my 09 700 polaris and it worked great. I'm going to try dual pods thru the hood next week, just hoping the sensor that was in the airbox doesnt mess with it.

we went to a muffler shop and had them bend some elbows and got some radiator hose to conect them to the carbs. then put the k&n filters on the end of the pipe. and ran up behind the head light. that worked good. but it was not efi. it was for a thunder cat 1000.wasn't the lightest option but worked good. my water sled is a polaris xlt. but building a cat one for next year for a buddy.
