Togwotee Mountain Lodge vs. Lava Mountain Lodge

Tog you need to add snow to that pic..

Just so you know I'm giving it considerable thought of going to Togwotee Lodge for my 15th year in a row at least 3 times a season :face-icon-small-hap

I heard all good things about Lava, I've eaten there-never stayed. You only have to ride the trail a little ways out, but they don't seem to get the same cover in that immediate area.

Togwatee - I've had good & bad experiences - but we keep going back because of the conviences.
Biggest complaint is - everytime at checkout they seemed to have it F--K'd up. Couple winters ago the food was a little to ritzy(trying to hard to be upscale)for this steak & taters guy.

I've also stayed at Crooked Creek - food and treatment at that time was excellent. Has changed hands since. The riding in union pass area is more meadows, less technical in my opinion.

That's cool.. With 15 years up there you probably don't get lost as often? Say like you do in the Snowys!!:D "just busting your balls Tog"
I started going to the Togwotee area in 1978..

Lava Mountain is still a locally owned place. And I always like to support the little guys..
Turpin Meadows would be my other choice.
Both places will take great care of you!
And I would also recommend that you hook up with Joe from Brooks Lake for a guide!! If you do see if Joe found my windshield
Either way you will have a great time!!
Cheers:beer;

This will be my 12th year going out west. We go out every year in Jan. I'm from IL. I have stayed at the Line Shack Lodge, Lave Mountain and in Laramie. I have not stayed at Togwotee because it was going to cost too much to stay there. I think the cost of staying at Togwotee is more but last year the food was more at Lava. The trail everyone complains about was changed a couple of years ago. It no longer comes up from the back, it runs up along the road and was fine last year coming in and out. Last year we stayed at Lava and the snow was so good that we never really got more than 10 miles from the lodge. Lava has a heated shop that we used to work on a sled last year. i don't think Togwotee has a shop you can use. The people at Lava are nice. If you want to have a good time look up Cowboy Jim at Lave one night. Cowboy Jim made us feel really welcome, went out of his way for us. we will be staying at Lave again this year.

I guess if you stayed there YOU WOULD KNOW THEY HAVE A SHOP!!
WHY SAY SOMETHING BAD ABOUT A PLACE YOU HAVE NOT STAYED AT????:mad:

Togwotee is probably not for you

If you enjoy going big, like Cooke, or Vail, I would suggest that continue on to Alpine or Afton. Both are very nice lodges. The service last year was AWFUL at Towogtee. I called and couldn't even get a person who knew how to book a room, let alone if there were any available. However, the guide-shop guys are very knowledgable, and always know the best info!

However, if you're really looking to ride the mountains, I would go to Afton or Alpine. Togwotee is more trail and tree playing, with meadows. Any hill-climbing is a pretty significant trailer-pull away (or trail ride if you're so inclined).
