Snow tires on enclosed trailer

Anyone running them? Thoughts for or against?

I'm running studded snow tires on mine. I drive over Chief Joseph pass going to Cooke City. It can get pretty icy and I thought it would help the truck with the corners and stopping. I also put studded tires on the truck. The trailer is about 6800lbs empty so every little bit can help.

Great idea. We've had to chain up the trailer before when it was slick enough - studs would help out a lot.

They are 16" rims. I can't remember the tire name but they are 10 ply and made for a truck.

That’s been my experience, have horse trailer torsions with 16” toyo trailer tires for our southern Idaho creek roads on my 25’ charmac.

Needing something in a 14” stud with real sidewall for my triple 34’ haulmark though, having poor luck.

Charmac runs gravel and rock roads local, no flats with the toyo.
Haulmark has pavement road trip duty and needs some grip for those 60 mph wind speed on a sheet of ice days.

I was looking for some recently also. I couldn't find any trailer specific tires pinned for studs. If you are running 16's there are several good 10 ply options made for trucks, but the only 14's I could find were for passenger cars and didn't have the load rating. I would also be interested of someone finds an option.

Shouldn't need studded tires on your boat

Why not ditch the 14" and buy a new set of 15" or 16" wheels so you have a lot more tire options.

The tires I put on are Hercules Avalanche X-Treme on a 16" rim
I bought new rims so I could just change them over in the summer.
I like the tires but they sure flex when you turn sharp. (backing up)

Not enough clearance for 16’s or I would. Shorter doors and 34’ trailer makes lifting for clearance a poor option.

Are passenger snow tires a bad idea? I’ve been running them for years but my aluminum trailer was never loaded. Now I’m heavier so concerned. I think their rated at 1750 lbs each. I absolutely love the traction they provide. Many times I used brake controller to help slow down. This year doing some longer trips so worried I might need to upgrade. Can’t go bigger then 14.

You can get 16" snow tires which are not taller than 14", depending on the exact size you have/desire.

205/75-14 = 26.1" diameter
205/60-16 = 25.7"
205/65-16 = 26.5"
205/70-16 = 27.3"
