Single egt probe. Where would you put it?

I'm putting a Koso single egt gauge on my 09 IQ800 and I'm wondering where is the best place to install the probe? I was thinking just past where the Y pipe comes together? Or would it be better to put it closer to the motor on just one cylinder? I don't plan on running it on the edge. Just looking to get an overall idea if and when the motor goes lean or rich. Any better ideas?

Is it wrote in the Koso installation manual?

My friend has a twin EGT, and they said 4'' from the pistons on single pipe, and 7" on twin pipe

Well, I just installed two of them in two similar sleds, an 06 600 fusion, and an 08 600 shift. The shift also got an slp pipe and can, vforce reeds, and an slp air horn. I installed the probe per the Koso instructions, "for a single pipe, 4" from the piston skirt." The results were a bit frightening. With throttle postions in the "low to mid" range (normal riding) I was seeing temps that would exceed 1300F with 440 mains, and the needle in the 3rd position, per the slp instructions.

My point is, this seems really warm. However, on the 06 600 fusion, with stock exhaust, slp airhorn, 410 mains, and the needle in the 2nd position (from top) which is the way I've been riding it for two years with almost 2500 miles, I was seeing temps over 1350F. (I actually have the slp pipe and can for this sled too, but after seeing those temps on the shift, I was scared! Figured I would only burn one down rather than both of them.

In retrospect, I would rather have just listened to SLP's jetting advice and not put the Koso's on. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. Now I'm fixating on the egt's and leaving pinch marks in the seat.

I got some advice after the fact on the probe placement, that suggested puting as far from the piston skirt as possible without putting in the exhaust stream of the other cyl. This is hard to do on a stock Polaris Y pipe. To be effective in this placement, you'll need the "weld in fitting" for the probe, as the clamp version will not hold without grinding on the web between the two pipes and then rewelding. Either way, you're welding.

If you're set one using only one EGT (I have the dual Koso's on my sled), I'd put it on the mag side. When you're sitting on the sled, it's the right side in case you didn't know. That piston always seems to run hotter. But, if I were you, I'd get dual EGT's. If your sled is stock and you plan on leaving it that way, I probably wouldn't bother putting an EGT sensor on. Just my 2 cents.

for best results on any egt application please go to www.f-bombracing.com go to Digatron Tech page and follow that procedure...as it is theory and applies to all EGT installations and uses on your 2 stroke. You will then be able to understand what you are seeing and why. It's not nearly as complex as that amount of reading might emply. In ten minutes of field test time you will have it nailed.

So far you've wasted $295 (indicitive of about 90% of the EGT users worldwide) and a lot of your time...get it back with KNOWLEDGE!@:D
