rxl mod help-help build

just got an awesome running 93 rxl sks.great power.want to build it up but want to be realistic. we mountain ride and it seems to have plenty of get up. i know its never gonna be a light wieght super sled but there has to be some resonable mods to do. this is bone stock-any suggestions would be appreciated.what to do first?

FIRST THING TO DO, get yourself about 6' of 3/8 chain, pull all the fuel injection components off the rxl, all of it, the battery included, wrap about 3' of the chain securely around all the parts leaving about 3' dangling, go to the nearest cliff, if there are no cliffs nearby a bridge will do, have you ever seen the sport of hammer throwing? grasp the end of the chain, plant your feet firmly, spin around about 3 times and throw the whole mess as far as you can off the cliff/bridge. Go get yourself 3 38mm mikuni carbs from a carburated 650, you'll need the matching carb boots as well, put them on and forget you ever owned a fuel injected 650.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I had a brand new '91 rxl back when, still bitter. Seriously get some carbs, you'll need the carb boots from a '91 or newer. They are called 02 cylinders and the intake port is bigger than the 01 cylinders from '88 to '90. There was a guy on here last nite that had some slp pipes for sale, they respond well to pipes, the old rxl was pig rich and guys used to get a fuel pressure regulator to drop the pressure some, aaenn used to sell different chips to use with there pipes. there is a ton of parts and knowledge out there about these things, someone else is bound to speak up. If you don't want to lose the subaru injection system make sure you keep the battery charged fully, if it drops below 11.7 volts (or something like that) it will burn it down, if you look at it wrong it will burn it down, that is when it's not flooding itself everytime you try to start it.

If you switch it over to carbs then you can watch ebay and find a set of SLP pipes for it. Throwing triple SLP pipes on it increased the hp by like 20 horse or something stupid... great fun.

SLP made pipes for the 600 and then the 650. They are not interchangeable. The 650 pipes had 'torque tubes'. Right off the cylinder flanges a little piece of tubing stuck down, maybe 2", on the pipes. That's how you know if you have 650 pipes vrs 600 pipes.

The Horne brothers in Utah at Alpine Design used to have a pretty crazy turbo setup for the 650s back in the day.

Oh my.... the memories of the RXL's are coming back....

That EFI system is nice, WHEN it works. I had 3 of these sleds at one time and 1 of them was a good reliable sled while the rest were just like Jay says. The chassis is not bad for some old iron, if you do some upgrading. I like to use the shocks from a 97-98 XC, I think they are around 16" long, then I make my own radius rods and tie rods since you'll end up with a longer ski stance. I use Heim joints on the trailing arm side of the radius rods, and that's the sled that got me into building trailing arms after bending one up driving down the trail and bumping a rock. I also put an Xtra-lite skid in it and a custom tunnel. Then, I wanted to change the looks of it, went with a Gen II belly pan and hood and while I was doing all of that I did a Bentwrench drop and roll to get the room needed for the 2" track. The motor, came with an AAEN pipe/chip setup and that was a night/day difference from stock. Busted the PTO off the crank at about 6k miles and sent it to Indydan to work it over, did a complete motor rebuild at that time and converted it to carbs and K&N style air filters. Replaced that heavy azz seat/tank with one from a Gen II RMK. Clutch - went with a wide roller P-85 and a Cat roller secondary. Geared it down to 19-39.

Had a lot of fun on that old machine, probably should have kept it but I stepped up to the world of twins and started all over again.

ok bad news- first this is my buddys sled and it is what was affordable-lost the sled 400yrds down a cut into trees. luckily only steering got jacked up-already got it coming-bad news is lost the bearing closest to the clutch-not the main but first internal. clutch is siezed to shaft-busted it while removing. had no idea p-85 went for the prices on e-bay, ouch. will any p-85 fit? how do you tell the differance if not? dont know what to do-anyone know of a good 600-800 twin that some one is looking to part with- i just need to help him get this going, not good when you dump all your eggs in a basket and relize they r all cracked.any advice or leads would be great --thanks-
