Older Polars EFI sleds (500 Indy)

Looking at a clean low mile 1994 500 Indy for my kid, but it is EFI. That scares me away. I know the early 650's had issues. Any input ?

Riding buddy of mine had a '93 500 EFI and it never gave him a lick of problems. Ran well and started easily.

I had 2 94 Indy 500 EFI sleds. Never had 1 problem with the EFI Always ran great. The Fuji 500 motors were pretty much bullet proof. All you have to do is take the battery out in the spring and keep it on a trickle charger all summer & it will work just fine. Some people buy a new battery every year, but I never had to replace one in the 4 years I had them. I would not hesitate getting one if they were well maintained. I finaly sold mine, 1 had 4900 miles, and the other had 5600 miles all trouble free.

the only problem we had was batteries got 5,000 miles on it originally . its now on its 1st rebuild and now has 2,800 more miles on this rebuild .just turn the key an give it a pull starts on 2nd one my dad uses it to ice fish and lion hunt on . 1992 sks 500.

Most of the "issues" with those early EFI sleds were because most mechanics had no clue how to fix them if anything went wrong. Sound familiar? The biggest fear I'd have with one now is the fact that the wiring is now 15 years old and so are all the electrical connectors on the chassis. Some of the EFI parts might be a bit pricy to replace today as well. Worst case scenario is at some point in the future it would have to be converted to carbs - not the end of the world. I had an RXL myself and a buddy had a '92 EFI 500, both were nice sleds. One FYI if you do buy it - I've seen fuel pumps fail on these sleds. If the pump starts making an unusual noise (squeals instead of "purrs"), better look hard at replacing it.

I know of another guy that has one of those also. It is all original and runs like a top. His wife used to ride it now his grandkids ride it when we all go.

I grew up riding on a 93 Indy 500 EFI. They are great sleds with regular sled matinence. The key with them is that you always need a good battery for the EFI. A slow trickle charge works very well. My dad bought ours in 94 as a used sled. He rode it, I rode it, and we racked up many thousands of miles it. Always run great, even out in Montana. Only had to rebuild the engine once. 1st pull would be ¼-½ pull to set the computer, second would be a full pull and it would start up. We finally sold it to our neighbor this winter, for his kid. Hope your kid has as much fun on it, as I did.

I had a 92 that I put thousands of miles on. Only issue was a battery ground wire short that had me towed home once. Found the problem right away, good as new. As others have said, a trickle charge is essential, especially on the 92s.

It's a sled I still wish I had. We sold it to a guy who totaled it on his first ride. No way to treat my baby...

500efi

i just picked up a 96 rmk 500EFI (with 5800miles, 99% stock) couple weeks ago.
have rode it 3 times now trouble free, no problems.
i ride stuff hard too so i know its a tuff sled. very lightweight, being that i'm only 125lbs. its nice to be able to throw a sled around! lol
