New to me 08 XP, gearing is 20/49? Seems really deep?

My understanding is stock is 21/45 on 09s and up? Was the 08 geared differently? Sled seems to hit a wall at 60mph. 20/49 seems way deep to me if stock is 21/45,

I sled about 5000-7500feet, 154 stock track, want a good all around sled, climbing, boondocking, get her up to 75 anyways on the trail.

Am I missing something here. Guy I bought it off states 21/49 was stock geaing, but I am not finding it...

Where should I go with this? Back to bottom 45?

20/45 is stock gearing on a 154.

based on the info provided and the math, you might gain back 10 mph on your top end going back to stock. one tooth on the top is around 5 mph and one tooth on the bottom is usually around 2-3 mph.

I would also check your clutch set up as one of my friends has an 08 154 and can get 80-90 on the dream dial on hard pack.

it may take more than gearing to get you there.

2.45 ratio is good on the Mt. Not for running trails in Minn.

I'm pretty sure The 08 154 came first out as a 19/45 than brp was changing the top gear to a 20t cause of the belt issues. I was running 20/51 before I went belt drive, but it is a full mt sled not a trail racer.

More research reveals that the 08s came out with 21/49 gears, and a few in 2009 apparently.

Don't get me wrong, I DON'T WANT A TRAIL BLAZER! lol. I have had my fair share of well performing mountain sleds, and ALL of them, including the 96 powder special, would do 75mph+.

None have ever been geared so deep that 65 was top speed, and the 09 up are now 21/45 stock, which seems to work quite well. So I am just wondering(I guess I need to give the gearing a fair chance, I've only ridden it on the trail! :face-icon-small-con. Why so deep, will it really be that much better in the trees that it is worth sacrificing other areas of the sleds performance like hill climbing, or trail? (like I think it will, but I could be wrong).

Is your sled a 154 or 163? 163's came 21/49 and we almost always geared them to a 20. They will still do upper 70's-low 80's with the TRA overdrive.
Keep in mind the new Doo's are coming geared at 19/51 and will top out in the mid 70's mph.
If its a 154, I would recommend 19/45 for off trail riding. Lower altitudes you might go up a tooth or basically back to stock gearing.

My 2014 XP Summit Sport 800R 154 came stock with 19/49 gearing. I had a 21t gear so I just installed that right away, since I'm riding low altitude in Michigan. My 2009 Summit 800R 154 had the stock 21/45 gearing and I thought that was just fine. I don't really notice much of a difference between the 2014 and 2009, but I haven't tried a top speed run with the 2014.

You are probably hitting a wall due to the clutching, not the gearing.

Figure out what is in it, then call SHR @ 612.718.3861

Agree with it being a clutch issue. My 09 163 had 21/49 gears and it would show 91-93 on the speedo lake running.

OK, time for some real facts...

stock was 21/45
update was 19/45 (too low IMHO but perfect for 2.5 track)

SHR did 20/45 for stock 2.25 track

clutching...I would say this is your main culprit...be it simple maintenance or tuning for your elevation...

call for details...BJ

John is right, I forgot that the dealer took back my 21 tooth gear when they gave me the 19. than I went 20/51 after.
