MCCALL AREA GROOMING SEASON PLANS, an update

As many of you know we had a rough start last year in north Valley County with the grooming. See http://www.snowestonline.com/forum/showthread.php?t=192992&highlight=adams+county+idaho for some background.

Well we tried to do some planning this time. We made up a procedures manual for taking care of many of the things that killed us last winter during the Christmas Holidays.

This year, we have the manager carried over to this fall and he has already hired replacement operators, and have the groomers in excellent shape and ready to go. They will take them out for trail runs soon before the season actually starts to test them for reliability.

The machines were all given major maintenance work taking care of all sorts of items that could cause problems during normal runs. We have started using a new super grease, all bearings packed, synthetic oils, new batteries, new windshield wipers, etc, and have an old cat called the Challenger as a back up for the heavy use area at the Wallace lot on the Warren Wagon Road. It can be used on most of the runs that are not to steep or deep as a backup.

We have a front end loader now that belongs to the grooming program that will be used by volunteer operators to keep the parking lots open and the snow pushed back to maintain the largest size possible. Volunteer groomer operators are all drug tested and ready to go as back up for the regular operators for high use period runs and in case of illness.

We are working on getting some new signs up this fall but due to the late start will not be completed untill next year. We have a new parking lot opened up just a mile south of the Wallace lot to be used for overflow and long-term parking. Named the Brush Cr. parking lot. New signs are ordered.

The long term forecast is for more than normal precipitation and lower than normal temperatures during the middle of the winter by the Weather Bureau. SO, it should be a great sledding season, just hope we don't run out of funds. By the way, please designate your sled permit sticker for area 43A when you buy it so we can keep these groomers running as long as possible this year.

One downer item of note, we hear that the Winter Inn is going to be closed this winter in Warren. Then, we hear that Burgdorf is going to have gas and maybe, maybe, have food. Yet to be confirmed!

We are working on the FS to get some warming huts in the north county and to do more grooming over on the west side of New Meadows. (Yet to be determined). New groomer scheduled to be added to the Cascade area this winter. Delivery yet to be determined. (Guaranteed to float)

The McCall club has volunteered well over 2,000 hours this last year to the grooming program to help the county and the Forest Service so we all can have good year this time. The county management has been on top of the program this year and has accepted the clubs help.

Hope it is a good year for all of you and for us riders too. Let it snow.

Spud

PS, anyone wanting to help the forest service put out marker posts, signs and clear trails, please pm me. We will let you know when they are going to make these runs. None scheduled yet.

Sorry to here that the Winter Inn may be closed. It was always good to stop and have a cold one or two with the owner's and talk. Liked to ride Pony Meadows and Bear Lake, but now it will be a long ride back without a stop at night.
It would be nice if they could find someone to run it for the winter.

My personal thanks to all of the hard workers both volunteer and paid! WE THE SNOWMOBILERS OF IDAHO/WASHINGTON/OREGON WHO USE 43A/MCCALL APPRECIATE YOU AND YOUR EFFORTS!

The plan looks and sounds great. THERE IS ALWAYS A COLD BEER IN OUR TRAILER FOR ANY VOLUNTEER OR OFF DUTY GROOMER....ALWAYS~!

Trail conditioning has started

We have started the trail conditioning by "track packing" the road to Warren from the Wallace parking lot today. The snow is a little skimpy but there is more forecast this weekend. As soon as we get some more on the back country trails off the main roads, we will start the other machines out packing the trails and swing into full schedule. Go to http://www.snowmobilemccall.net/grooming/mccall-idaho-grooming-report.html for a detail listing of where the groomer went the previous night.

Spud.

another update

The cat went from the Wallace lot up Copet Cr. over the top to Brundage Reservoir and down to the Titus lot (Upper Elevation) yesterday and it took 14 hrs to do it due to the light very fluffy snow. She had to work to fill in the water bars and the trail is not on the normal route in places due to the snow.

Below is a direct quote from the driver and she is very good at what she does.

"Tomorrow I will try to open the trail to Clayburn. I'm hoping to get as many of the trails open during the day this week and get the rest next week at night starting Wednesday night. The only two that might be a problem to open are Titus to West Face to the top of green gate because of low snow, and brush creek because of low snow, but of course I will try." She plans on going to Wallace Lane, (Adams County) from Titus this week too.

Remember what we spend on extra fuel now before the snow settles and is deep enough to groom, we won't have for fuel in the spring when we have lots of snow. We have to balance what funds we have. It looks like it might warm up later this week to settle this powder.

We also want to make a run from Wallace to Warren this week.

We are going to groom up Pearl cr. about 6 miles this year. Opens up some great riding up there.

FYI, Spud

Thanks for the grooming update from us down here in Adams county, if the groomer runs down the the Adams Wallace parking lot she may encounter a few blown down trees from a couple storms ago, not sure if they can be pushed out of the way, she may need a second hand with a saw. If help is needed let us know down here and we'll get someone rounded up..

Thanks

They went down that way today and a new operator went with her to learn the routes and he was to cut up the downed trees. Thanks a lot for the offer. I would like to go riding over in your area between Christmas and New Years. Have talked to Scot about it, need some guides, would be appreciated. Mel
