Exhaust temp sensor bad??

Hi, Just looking for a little help on this one, the service engine light flashes 5 times when I start the sled, which says something is wrong with the exhaust temperature sensor.

Can I just try to clean the thing and reset the ECU?

If I can how do you reset the Service Engine code?

Is there any inexpensive alternatives to buying the $119 Polaris replacement one?

Don't think you need to clean it. Check the wires going to it carefully they may be melted. It is Zip tied to the radiator hose to keep it off the pipe from the factory and if the zip tie breaks and can get melted on the pipe.
 
follow the wiring back to the MAG side wiring harness (near the TPS) they have bullet type crimps that may simply come disconnected...

or the wiring may be broke from rubbing on hood...

no way to clean/re-use...but i would elimintate wiring before you waste the money on a new one, or if you have access to another one, swap them to see if it clears your problem...

the ECU will reset itself after it runs for a few mins and knows the sensor is good...

Sweet, thanks guys for the info! I will definitely check out the wiring to the 9's. I bet there is a $20 NAPA part number that would cross reference to this thing, but good luck finding it.
 
Still showing code for bad exhaust temp sensor

I bought a new sensor ($135) and chased all the wires, everything looks good, but it still flashes service engine 5 times when I start the machine. It seems to run a little rich, but not too bad.

I understand the code should automatically reset itself and there is no way to reset it manually.

Any ideas on what else to do guys????
 
My next move would be to pull the harness from the ECU and check continuity from the ECU end of the harness, to the bullet connectors you plugged the sensor into. The wires are known to break inside the insulation, and this can't typically be found visually.

oh man, i think you wasted your money on a part thats not needed..

i think we miss understood your "issue"...

the RED check engine light on the gauges (on the side of the numbers) is the light that flashes an engine code...your issue is not a problem at all..

the service engine light is just a reminder is all...straight from the owners manual...

The gauge logs the number of engine
hours between service reminders.

When the logged hours reaches the
designated service interval (set by the
user), the gauge provides a reminder
that service is due. “SErVCE” will
flash in the odometer area and “ENG”
will flash in the icon area for five
seconds each time the vehicle is
started until the service reminder is reset.

To reset the reminder at the existing interval:

1. Enter the service interval screen.

2. Press and hold the SET button for ten seconds, continuing to hold
even after the display begins to flash.

3. When the display stops flashing, release the button. The service
interval has been reset.

To reset the reminder at a new interval:

1. Enter the service interval screen.

2. Press and hold the SET button for five seconds, until the hours
begin to flash.

3. Immediately release the button.

4. Press the button again up to five times to advance the reminder in
50-hour increments.

NOTE: The maximum interval is 250 hours.

To disable the service interval reminder, press the SET button once
after reaching 250 hours on the display. The gauge will display
“OFF”.
 
Old sensor used for experimental purposes

Sorry, but I actually took my dremmel tool and slit the steel sleeve on the old one to see what was inside of it. I did this because they rub on the hood and I wanted to see if I could safely bend the new one a bit to give it clearance from the hood.

And the $140 answer is YES, you can bend the exhaust temp sensor sleeve to clear the hood. The wires travel down at least 1" before anything important starts happening in there.
