Emergency 4 stroke starting.....

For 18 years I have been a HCS and always on Cat. You sled that long, you will break a starting rope. Of course, most of my Cats came with a back up rope you can spin around the clutch and get her fired up to get back to the ole' trail head, or leave it running and continue to rock out. Man, many I time I have thanked Cat for fuel injection as you only had to use the back start rope once or twice to get it fired. Happened on my buddies carbureted Doo and took 30 fickin minutes to get it fired.....

Anyway, I am now waiting on a new M1100T, my first time ever riding, much less owning a 4 stroke sled. I know all 4 strokes on the market right now are started with a battery and key. Is there any backup way to start one if your battery runs down or you blow out a starter? Man, it would suck to be in the middle of the backcountry boondocking and not be able to start your sled due to a battery, starter or some BS electrical malfunction. Just trying to figure out if there is something I might want to carry with me for emergency starting. Thanks!

Just carry one of the old Arctic Cat starter straps.

I have been riding a Nytro since 2008 and have never had a battery or starter issue, but just for fun have started it with the strap on the clutch. When they are warmed up they are harder than a 2 stroke, but not impossible.

Have had yamaha fourstokes between me and my dad since 2006, never had any issue with battery or starter. Always had jumper cables with use just in case, have boosted my dads apex off his truck a few time in the parking lot for initial start up when its really cold out.

Can someone explain why they are so worried about electric start. How many times does your pickup not start? Have a atv/ utv any problems there? I had a lawnmower not start once. Only because the starter had been acting up for a year before. Usually if there is a problem there will be signs.

If the battery dies leave it and go get another one. Yup it may have to sleep out in the middle of Timbuktoo. I doubt that the wild animals will ride it. Hard to steal a sled that is dead in the middle of Timbuktoo also.

Last time I had to get a ride home with a friend was a blast. That was only casue some SOB stole my gas cap off my sled.

My pickup truck also doesn't cartwheel down a mountain. :plane:
Personally i plan for the worst. That way what ever happens is better then what you planned for. Would you really be happy if you had to leave your sled out over night and some jackwagon came along and cut your seat, stole skis, you get the picture just because you did not want to carry a 5 oz strap or a short set of wires?

I would share at least some of the concerns of the OP regarding the 1100. I'd be at least thinking about a backup plan considering that Cat withdrew the option of electric start on the 800's, including deleting it as a standard feature on the LXR's earlier this year. So now guys who snow checked those sleds, with electric start as a big selling feature, have to yank on the rope too.

And when I was looking at the recent history of electric start on sleds there were lots of instances of multiple failures. Looks like Yammie at least may have it right.

So what are the issues that has Cat doing an almost unheard of action on the 800's? And how do I know that the 1100's don't share some concerns? Just asking.:face-icon-small-con

Three years on my nytro, never and issue, and I went with a lightweight battery...

Just my opinion (shared by most) that the starter is a pretty refined science on a 4smoker....just a mixture of right cranking amps, and right Good solenoid, and ensuring idiot switches are good, and you should never have an issue....

Some guys on nytros had some issues with an idiot switch that causing them to short the solenoid to get the sled to fire....

(idiot switch= safety switches in the system to prevent you from hurting yourself, others, or the machine...)

if you ride with people who own the PC800 you could get a 12v plug in with clips on the end, and then you could just use the acc plug on it to re-charge the battery on the 1100 or straight wire it to start the sled. (cause we KNOW the m800 will start:face-icon-small-win)

the 4 strokers in these parts carry a thousand watt generator for 30-40 below starting when they go in the bush and all have circ heaters...its hard to start the big cc two strokes in the same temps as well....

If its that cold, I will be putting another pot of coffee on and waiting until it warms up to a more decent reading.........

yep..but often the temps are cold for a long long time...easily 3 week bursts in many area;s...and some of these guys usings these sleds often don;t have the luxury of being able to sit it out...but i agree with ya...you won;t find me in those situations,i would be sitting at starbucks..
